That is actually a very common construction technique. Why waste so much wood that is going to get milled away, just because the headstock is half an inch too narrow? Gluing on an extra piece to widen the headstock saves on material waste, which translates into a lower price for the consumer. Plus, the glue joint is actually stronger than the wood itself.

While the neck is one solid piece of mahogany, the headstock has two additional pieces.

yeah, i've seen it many times and understand why it's done, just hate the way it looks.

It comes in purple - I played one when i was staying in the Shibuya "district" (for wont of a better word) in Tokyo. Very nice! It is a subsidiary of ESP, but don't read that as "budget"...
