Sounds Epic to me.

I'm going to be all over the Luminlay but I'll probably go with regular strap buttons as I like Cliplocks!

Right now I'm thinking:
Standard body and neck wood
Snakewood Fretboard
Quilted Maple Top (In a red stain probably). *Cough* Nothing to see here */Cough*

Can't wait for this to happen.

Keep in mind snakewood is both hard to get and really expensive so you would probably have to supply it yourself. With this particular type of wood, make sure it is ridiculously dry.

The top section of the neck where the headpiece is mounted can have an overlay of contrasting wood; Tom mentioned it in his spec post. I think the idea is that you can have an overlay that matches your fretboard, or your top if the guitar has one.

# of strings is still the major one, I guess. I've been assuming 8 based on the direction of the recent comments, but there was quite an initial interest in a 7 as well. There was also a question a few pages back about the position of the three-way switch: Eric's drawing has it located with the vol/tone controls, but Electric Wizard's previous mockup from your earlier drawing had it on the upper horn. I'm guessing that's an either/or decision for the whole run, not "pick how you want your instrument."

Are fretboard-face dots an option as well, Tom? If so, did you want to limit the possible configurations? (I seem to remember that the BFR had fretboards with no dots, centered dots, offset dots, and twelfth-fret-only dots, but that was a smaller run and the fretboards weren't being CNCd.)

Aye, I'd really like some offset dots. 8 strings ftw.

You guys can thank me for the compound radius. Just kidding. But Tom, it's definitely an 8 string, right? And what about neck construction, bolt-on? Set-neck?

I'm also assuming that the chambered-body option has been considered and is off the table.

I'm thinking that this will most likely be an 8 string run but if there is enough interest in the 7 I could consider the idea of doing a dual run with both 7's and 8's. Semi hollow won't be an option. The toggle will need to be near the controls. This run will have centered face dots or no face dots and the option of luminlay or plastic sidedots.

Actually it was my mistake to add in the matching headstock overlay. It is like a reflex to throw that in with the top and I didn't even realize until I read through the last couple of posts! Headless, duh!

This model may also end up being available through XEN as a straight fret model with the new Hipshot hardware. Jason confirmed that the 6 string hardware is basically ready to go and the 7 and 8 string hardware will follow shortly behind. I haven't recieved any info on pricing yet.

Oakland Axe Factory uses Octave4Plus custom strings, Dimarzio and Lace pickups, Hipshot Hardware and Graphtech saddles.

What's the radius range for compound boards (I'd prefer 12-16)? Also, I'm not interested in a fancy top, would a mahogany or ovangkol neck make up for ash's lack of mids?

An 8 string guitar? That looks too big to be a mandolin.

^^^^ Since the discussion has been between 16" and 20", I'm pretty sure it's a 16-20 compound radius.

I've thought about it over and over and I don't see a down side to offering both 7 and 8's for this run. It will mean that I need to hand build another prototype but oh well, that's life.

The radius will be whatever the group decides on I guess. I'm not opposed to anything necessarily as long as the group says it's good.
I really couldn't say about the mahogany or ovangkol neck wood. I'd love to see an ovangkol neck though? Are any of the vendors selling ovangkol in dimension big enough for the neck?

16-20'' compound radius all day for an 8. Maybe the people gettings 7's can opt for the 12-16'' radius. But I for one definitely don't want a 12'' radius on any 8. On another note, ovangkol necks are awesome.

How's the scale on the 7's going to work? Will it be like the XEN progressive scale or whatever they call it, or will it be 27 - 25.5 across 7 strings?

Just kind of curious, although I'm pretty set on an 8 at this point.
