The thickness of the neck shaft itself starts at 3/4" total. I thin it down to around 5/8" prior to carving the neck profile. The finished neck with the fretboard attached is just shy of 7/8".
Regarding the neck profile I can do a shallow "C" shape or a slightly assymetrical flat profile like I did on Celticelk's 8 string.

1/4" abalone dots can be standard so just specify with or without when placing your order.

Thanks. My wife Wendy, the woman holding the guitar in some of the pics, actually took the photos of the guitar in the shop. She does most of my photography.

Regarding the neck profile I can do a shallow "C" shape or a slightly assymetrical flat profile like I did on Celticelk's 8 string.
The profiles themselves are pretty unique, think of the assymetrical flat as a very thin classical guitar neck with the assymetrical plane of the rear surface helping your hand and wrist maintain a good form while playing. In reality it doesn't feel like any classical that I've played but it is reminiscent of one in the shape. The C is more of a traditional shape but strecthed out to accomodate the wider neck. Both necks are pretty fast feeling but I think I prefer the flat for my style of playing.

Three questions:

1) Stainless steel frets a possibility for a up charge?
2) Maple finger board?
3) Custom size fretboard radius and neck shape?

I don't do stainless steel fretwire as an option on anything but my customs. I can do maple fretboards. I am not currently offering any other fretboard radius but I can do tweak the neck shape.

So I've worked out my specs with Tom! This looks like it's going to be absolutely fantastic, I'm so psyched about it. I'd highly recommend jumping on this if you're on the fence - he's amazing to work with, very prompt with answers, and just a friendly guy to boot!

Okay, on to my specs!
  • Singlecut Body Style
  • Ash Body
  • Satin Maple Top and Headstock Overlay
  • Black Hipshot Hardware
  • Volume, Tone and 3-Way Switch
  • Lace Aluma-Djent Pickups
  • 27" Scale 24-Fret Rosewood Neck and Fingerboard
  • Luminlay Side Dots

Not everything has been listed; I want to keep a few things a surprise. I was going to go with Bamboo/Bubinga, but on Tom's recommendation went with the Rosewood. I loved the RW neck I played on a friends PRS, and I can't imagine how great it'll be on an 8-string! There's definitely enough variation here to fine tune your guitar. While singlecut 8's are pretty uncommon, I know there are a bunch of people like me who don't really djent and want an 8-string that's not just another RG clone.

E:^^^ TomAwesome, he seems to be able to do a fair amount there. Hopefully he can do what you want.

Hi everyone, sorry I didn't reply sooner, I had to make a run to Connecticut yesterday with my sister in law to pick up her kids so that kind of killed most of the day.

To address the finish questions-

The base price of $999 includes around 3 sealer coats and 7 top coats of a very high quality satin oil based wiping varnish.

The upgrade to the flamed maple top and headstock overlay include a two step dye color, and the same clear coat that the base model has. The two step dye is basically a dark coat first applied to bare wood and then sanded back. This first step darkens the grain so that it is visible through the second dye which is a lighter wash coat that tints the wood. The first step really works well with a brown, black or dark amber but I have done all sorts of colors on scrap wood during experiments. One of my favs was green first and then a yellow over that. I don't have examples of the different colors yet, I'll work on some this week.

The headstock overlays can be dyed to match the body or left natural, its up to you. I like matching headstock personally.

Oakland Axe Factory uses Octave4Plus custom strings, Dimarzio and Lace pickups, Hipshot Hardware and Graphtech saddles.

Yes, the purple guitar was done using a black dye first and then sanded back to bare wood and then a purple dye over that.
