Build 3: Viewer's Choice
Alongside my 2nd build, I'm going to start on my third build.
I have most of the wood required for either project, but only enough time for one. The other will be done, but later, probably next spring. So if you'll humor me and vote for which you guys would like to see first, I'll get'r done. Option 1: Hail To The King The Zealot King V This is a King V shaped sub-contra bass. It has a 36" scale and 5 strings. It is designed to be tuned F#0 - B0 - E1 - A1 - D2. I've shown early versions of this design before, but it has been modified since then. It'll be a mahogany body with a 3-piece maple neck and ebony fretboard (24 frets). I'm looking at EMG 40DC pickups with passive controls, hipshot hardware, etc. Metallic black with silverleaf trim. ![]() The Heretic Disciple Single-cut Disciple This is a super-tele guitar. It'll have 6 strings and a 25.5" scale. The pickup will be a Benedetto Jazz humbucker at the bridge, Graphtech Ghost saddles and an acoustiphonic pre-amp. It will be a chambered body, and there will be a soundboard transducer embedded into the chambering somewhere in the body. Controls will be master volume, piezo/magnetic blend, passive tone, and the tone knob will be a push/pull switch to enable/disable the soundboard transducer. Oil finish on the neck and body. The body will be mahogany with a figured claro walnut top. The neck will be Madagascar rosewood with a maple fretboard (24 frets). ![]() So, SSO, which will it be? |

I wanted to see that bass happen before, but a lot of the ideas you're talking about with the guitar just sound too awesome.

And the guitar would be put to good use...well, better use. It's for a good friend of mine in NYC. The bass is for me, and while I love building them and like playing them, I don't gig, I'm not even in a band, and I'm not really all that good at playing the damn thing. |

I basically agree with asher, I wanted to see the bass happen but then I read the specs for the guitar, and it intrigues me.

you need an "other" option.
i would love to see something else in the style of the hand of doom. however of the two designs posted, the first is by far my favorite. ...Each guitarist has an evil fat 40 year old blueswankler trying to get out, If you give in to temptation you'll be sitting next to a fender playing john lee hooker while trying to keep your combover in place. -Desecrated being black and enjoying watermelon, i think this thread needs more watermelon. budda |

Everyone else pretty much summed it up. I got done reading the specs for the bass, saw the picture and thought "That would be pretty cool!"
Then I read the specs for the guitar and thought "Hrmm...this one has a more obviously more in-depth description, which means you want to build the guitar more. So doo eet!

Actually, I've spent a lot more time on the first design. The electronics package is simpler because there just isn't that much space in a V's electronics cavity. As it is, 3 knobs might be pushing it.
It may also be worth noting that the guitar's design is 36.5" long, which is about the scale length of the bass. The bass will come out about 52.5" long. So far, I haven't been able to find a non-custom case that would fit it. |

second one for all the right reasons of seeing that thing come to life.
I like my guitar tone like I like my women, perfect rounded bottom end, cut in the mid section, heavy on the top end, and super tight. Omnium - Atmospheric/Trance/Ambient |

I've also been working on this alternative version, in case he decides he wants something a bit more...unusual. ![]() I think he'll prefer the first one though. He's a pretty conservative guy. |

Why is there no 'Both' option?!?
![]() In the end I chose the V, mainly because I was watching Mastodon, and Brent Hinds with his silverburst V |

If you are implying that mahogany makes a solid-body electric guitar sound "dark", I believe you are wrong. The tonewood myth is nonsense, friend. The last bass I purchased, in fact, had a predominantly mahogany body. With stainless steel strings, it was as bright as anything. With flats or nickel strings, it was a lot more subdued. There are many factors influencing a solid-body electric guitar's (or bass guitar's) tone. Body wood is not one of them. I kept it strung stainless, with DR Hi-Beams, actually. |

Thanks.
I went to woodcraft today...I think I'm going to go with bloodwood on the V bass neck. Might be a bit heavy though. |
