Domain Name Question

I own several domain names and I was wondering if I can renew them using a different company than the one I registered it with.

yep! i did that not long ago. i bought my name from domainsnext.com, and transfered it over to 1and1.com.

it was kind of a pain in the ass... domainsnext.com wasn't making it easy. there was some waiting period before they 'released' the domain name. it's nice now, though, since 1and1.com takes care of both my hosting and my domain name.

Can I just renew it from a new place without having to login to the old place and transfering it from there. The only reason I want to do this is because I registrered for the domain SO long ago that I forget all the information.

hmm... i had to actually refigure out all my information from domainsnext.com to get the transfer done, so you may want to give your provider a call if you can't remember any of the info.

You can renew it elsewhere, but it takes WAY longer and you risk losing it, because you have to wait for the "grace" period after it expires to be over, and every registrar seems to have a different one... sometimes as much as 60 days (or more) before they'll release a domain after it's expired.

Your best and most reliable method is to do the transfer BEFORE it expires.

Yeah I don't intend on letting it expire. I have over a month, I just wasn't sure if I could renew now from a different company.

Nope. You have to go through the "transfer" process. Get it started ASAP... a month may not be long enough.

yeah, my grace period was something like two weeks. PAIN IN THE ASS! lol

I mean it's set to expire in a month. So I'd have that + whatever "grace period" they'd have. Either way, I'll figure something out. It was registered in my name and with my email, but someone else registered it on my behalf, and I don't remember the login info or even what provider it was from.

As long as the technical contact email address is valid, you should transfer the registrar to the new company and renew it there.
