Need help in getting audio from a DVD to wav/MP3 format.

Hey guys, I could kindly use some assistance here. I gots me a new "deluxe" CD/DVD package from a most excellent progressive rock/metal act. Per my usual behavior, I'm ripping all the songs to mp3 to listen to on my computer/burn-to-a-single-disc-to-enjoy-in-the-car... and, well, the only way that the three additonal tracks on the second (DVD) disc can be heard is by playing them through the DVD menu.

My question here is: How can I extract the songs to (preferably WAV) an audio format to compress to MP3 and put with the others? I downloaded this software called Apex Video to MP3/WMA/WAV but am having no luck in getting it to work. There are two folders on the DVD disc, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS... the first contains no files , and the second a set of .BUP, .IFO, and .VOB files. I'm guessing the streaming data (audio/video) is in the .VOB files as they are the only ones big enough to contain video and/or audio data. How do I make this happen?

Bumping this out of sheer frustration. There's got to be a simple way to do this, like a CDex for DVD's. I tried Apex Video to MP3 WMA WAV Converter but I just got sliced up bits of the song in the output, same with Any Media to MP3 Converter. Sigh...

The only solution I can think of right now is mencoder, a program bundled with the free MPlayer. I used it a few years ago to rip DVDs into smaller video files. I know for certain that it is capable of doing what you need, but the downside is that it is a command-line program and figuring it out will take some time and will involve reading the documentation.

On the upside, it should be able to encode the DVD audio into MP3 directly.

EDIT: I have been reading into it, and it turns out it might be a bit more complicated than I had assumed. Just disregard this post.

Set up a recording program to record "what you hear" coming from the soundcard, hit the record button, and then play the DVD on the computer with another program. That's always worked for me in the past. It's not fast, but it works and it's a perfect replication.

Not all sound cards can do that, though... my old computer could do that, but I spent hours trying to get my current computer to do it and it never worked. I'm not sure if it's the drivers or the hardware itself, but either way the option just isn't there.

However, if it works, it's definitely a good option.

Odd. I've never found one that couldn't... Just go into volume control and set your recording device to Stereo Out... Unless of course you've done that

I've tried a whole bunch of things, but it was like a year ago so I don't remember exactly what I did. I'm pretty sure I don't have a 'stereo out' option, only line-in and microphone. My old PC had it, but my new one doesn't. I should go try in Linux, to see if it's a hardware issue or a driver issue.

Unfortunately, I can't check right now because my graphics card is dead and I'm waiting on a replacement.

Something like virtualdub or AutoGordianKnot may allow you to strip the audio from the VOB files.

It's been a while since I've messed with this so I can't give you a full tutorial, just a nudge in the general direction.

I would start with vdub as it has some pretty good options in it and it's free.
