Final Fantasy VII popularity question

I have two weeks off of school and I am thinking of tackling Final Fantasy VIII for the billionth time. It got me thinking..

Final Fantasy VII is often widely regarded as one of the most popular games of all time; definitely the most popular of the FF series. It is an excellent game in it's graphics, story, gameplay, etc. It has some amazing movies too.

Riddle me this; had it not been the first FF game released on PSone, would it be as big as it is today? Is it that good of a game that it could have been released at any time during the psone's reign that it would still be this cool? What if FF8 or 9 had been released in its place? Both games were great, however I will focus on 8 for now because it is my favorite.

ps... yeah, I do feel like a nerd for posting this..

FF8 is probably also my favorite 3D FF game. THough, I still think that FF7 would've been as big as it is if it was released after FF8... or FF7 in that case, whatever. These are two games with VERY different feelings and I can see why poeple love the one in FF7 so much. I do too, but I love FF8 for the beauty of it.

I still think FF8 sucks, but I never really got anywhere with it. FFVII is the best and then FF 3 4 5 6 and 10 follow after it.

i used to play FF1 (NES) until my thumbs bled. then, i got a little interested in FF3 (SNES). since then, i've pretty much written off video games. they cut into my music time.

I always thought FFVII was too easy, all you had to do is press one button.

Which is why it's my favorite!

I liked FF3? Tried to play FFVII, gave me and my friend vicious migraines after only an hour or two of play time, so we stopped playing it altogether.

Still, that measly hour was better than Granstream Saga, or that POS Saga Frontier.

Call me old school, but I like sprites.

Now I'd have to say Final Fantasy XII is my favorite, followed very closely by VII. I haven't even beaten any of the other ones, except X (and then I only beat it because it was Really Easy)

I've never played it all the way through, but one my friends was playing it last year, and i was remarking on how incredibly dated the graphics looked...

There's just something about 7. The characters and story really get into your head and stay there. The soundtrack is especially great, too, even for Nobuo. It's one of the very few RPG scale games that I've been able to play over and over again. Secret of Mana is the only other one I can think of right now.

I heard a rumour they're remaking FF7 for the PS3, exactly the same, but with new graphics. Anyone?

I heard it, too. I hope it's true. A lot of people seem pretty sure that it's going to happen, especially since the PS3 tech demo:

I believe FFVII would still be as big as it is today if FFVIII was released first. Since the story was great, the gameplay was very user friendly, and the fact that the whole game in general kept you plaining until the wee hours of the night and long after you've betten the game (I still play it from time to time).

As far as remaking FFVII, that would be cool. Just so long as they update the graphics, and leave everything else ALONE. I know they'll want to put in voice overs, which is fine (if they do a superb job). They can get all of the folks from the movie to repraise their roles.

After that, they outta redo FFVIII as well (if they redo FFVII). The game deserves it. With this one though, they can go on ahead and change the gameplay to make it a bit easier. I love this game, but I find it hard to replay it since it's so damned difficult. Maybe I'll get an old school PSone GameShark one day and make everything that much easier.

That would actually make me sad, because I hated most of the English voices in Advent Children

I dunno. After redoing 7, I think it would be more fun to adapt an older game like FFVI, or maybe even a different Square franchise like Secret of Mana, to work in a 3-D environment.

Perhaps other Square games would be nice, but I've only familiarized myself w/ their FF games (and.... Chrono Trigger). So, I could very well be missing out on some old SquareSoft game that is superb & don't even know it.

Even more reason for them to remake other games instead of just FF games!

I played through FFVII a year or two ago. It's still a great game, and I like it. I also started to play through FFVIII again, but for some reason I lost interest (I was at the end of disc 3). I like VIII about as much as I like VII. Then again, neither of them are on my "best games ever" list. My favorite PS1 RPG is Vagrant Story. It was an amazing game. Sadly I got stuck, and being an impatient kid back then I sold it. Now I can't find it anywhere.

/\.. Yes what he said... tales of Phantasia is a must..

Alpo- Vagrant story is actually somewhat of a final fantasy game. It does not directly say it, but if you look at the names of the people and some of the places as well as the timelines you can see it. To be more specific, I believe it is the third game in the Tactics franchise. FFXII was first, Tactics was next, then Vagrant Story.

I think FFVIII is fine.. no need to remake it. I would love to see FFVI redone though. If they did remake VII for ps3, I would like to see better graphics and maybe have them through in a few extra goodies with the story...stuff we did not know by playing the original one.

I guess when you look at it, FFVII was just a MONSTER of a game. The other FF's are good but from beginning to end FFVII takes the cake.

I've just finished VII, absolutely love the game but i much prefer VIII for some unknown reason. I just bought XII the other day actually....i just cant get into it, the system changes are just way to weird to get accustomed to.

Sometimes I do find FF7 really overhyped. The best game that Square put out to me is (MY OPINION here) Chrono Trigger. FF7 had a fairly decent plot. I still prefer 6 to it. I also found that the game was longer than it should have been, to me.
