Xbox 360 "open tray error"

I believe this is called the "open tray error". I've googled this a bit, but haven't exactly found many answers yet.

The system acts as if it's not reading the disc, any disc. After it says "reading" on the dashboard, instead of a game popping up, it'll just go back to saying "open tray". I tried powering the system down and lightly tapping above the tray (some recommended fixes).

Any ideas? Thanks.

It was about 2-3 years ago. I think this is maybe a 2nd gen model that doesn't suffer from the RROD (or at least as much).

I figure I can try and fix it myself. I have some tools and time, I just need the knowledge

I've had this happen twice to mine. First time it did it for a whole day and the second time only an hr or so. I just kept messing with it. Putting in any kind of media to try and get it to read. Turning it on and off ect. Both times I inserted a store bought Machine Head the burning red cd and it decided to read again lol. Guess it just likes machine head or maybe rob flyn scared it. Try dvd's and cd's and games that arent burned.

Mine does this every once in awhile. What I do is manually (actually pushing the tray button) take the disc out, push the tray shut, turn the Xbox off. Reboot, manually open the tray, put the disc in, manually shut it. That has worked every time so far. *knock on wood*

I've seen this happen on my friends one too, it just started working again after a few minutes.
Does anyone know anything about the usb ports not working? One of his 2 on the front doesn't seem to work anymore and we've no idea why. It's realy annoying because we watch stuff off hard drives a good bit on it as well as using a port for a controller.

Took it apart and hopefully fixed it (working for at least tonight). Some say to change the resistance of a potentiometer in the 360, something about giving the laser eye more strength?

Well anyway, it either worked or it was just coincidence. I've read the problem could come back, I think this is just a bandaid fix until the laser (or whatever part it is, I forget now) totally gives out.

I cleaned the lens eye thingie (damn is it obvious yet I don't know all the names for these parts yet? lol), but it looked very clean already as did the rest of the inside of the 360.

Now I gotta read up to see if people can cheat somehow on Gears Of War 2 on-line , or if I just suck at it hehe.

You sure? I read only the RROD failure was warrantied more than the standard 1 year, which I am well past. Either way, it's working w/o a 1-2 wait from Microsoft

Damn if it didn't start this shit again :-/ I tried all the little "tricks" to get it going mentioned here, and a few others, but nothing is working.

I'm going to look more into fixing it myself, but there's another option I guess. Can't I buy an "arcade" 360 and put my hard drive on it and it's essentially the same as my Pro model? And my Xbox Live still works? And I think all Xbox's past like 2008 have HDMI, right?

I had the same problem not long ago. Well,.. I bought a second hand 360 knowing that the drive was stuffed. I just bought a new drive (of much higher quality) and flashed it with the firmware of the original drive. It's true that I now have the option to play backups but I'm not going to bother - I only have 2 games at the moment anyway..

If this sounds like what you might need to do I can do a little tutorial on drive flashing if you'd like =)

Yeah my friends just died yesterday and he did what you did. I may do that to if I decide to not try to fix it myself.
