Beating the Game Once Is Only Half the Fun

I noticed a few of my gaming friends ONLY beat games they buy (or the story mode) once. They simply are not interested in unlocking all the secret endings / special weapons / special ability etc, or even care about exploring that world again in some cases.

IMO, while there is no right or wrong in this kind of playing style, I thought players like my friends are missing out on half the fun by not taking advantage of those unlockables / replayability of games.

Discuss.

Depends on the game. Some games' extra stuff (special abilities, special weapons, extra endings) are INSANELY boring and you get all the fun from beating it the normal way.

I laugh at the maniacs who try to get all achievement points on all games. Fuck. No way I'm gonna go through and collect all the flags in Assassin's Creed. I can't think of anything more boring to do with my time. Kill all the pigeons in GTA4? Hell no.

However, if I really like a game, I'll play it multiple times. I've beaten Chrono Trigger 9 times: 7 times in English and 2 times in Japanese. I've beaten Morrowind 3 times (and that's a long game). And so on.

Really really depends on the game.

I'm in between both views: I'll play a game over again, but probably won't get 100%. Some of the things aren't always worth the excessive amounts of time it takes to achive/ reach a skill level able to complete a challenge.

Ex. 1: Guitar Hero/ Rock Band.

You've got your head down
You've got your eyes closed
You look so pitiful now

Your body encrusted with ash
Breath heavy with toxins
Hair singed and matted
Clothes frayed and burnt

You are left with nothing

True... and it depends on the rewards / benefit too.

Also, there are certain games I replay thousand of times, because they are simply FUN, along with the extra stuff I can unlock. Like Resident Evil 4 is a good example.

Well said. Another example is GTA: SA. Some of the challenges simply make you say WTF and give up going for a 100%.

9 is my record (for Chrono Trigger). I've never beaten a game more times than that.

I don't have the exact figure, but I believe I've beaten GTA III, GTA: VC at least or close to 10 times at a 100% each. IMO, the challenge level in VC is just right and motivating enough for players to want to go for a 100%. GTA III is a little tough, and SA is simply not worth it once you get there once.

Another thing I wanted to add is this. Aside from replaying the WHOLE game from the beginning, some of these firends of mine I mentioned won't even go for stuff that would be benefitical for them in the current game play. Like in older GTAs, where you can be fire proof by beating the Fire Fighter Mission, or you can keep running without getting tired by beating the Ambulance mission. At least one of my friends won't even do them, and he exclusively do NOTHING but story missions. It is fine by me, but I thought beating only the story mode in a game like GTA is only half the fun.

I've completed Half Life 2 about 7 times, it's actually ridiculous. I keep unistalling/reinstalling it with Counter Strike when my computer's low on space. I've had to make a shitload of room at the moment and my Valve folder was over 9gig!!! so it had to go, at least for a little while

Anyway, the point of the story is, Half Life 2 IS the best story mode FPS ever, (not including sequels) hands down. Cannot get enough of that game

Also, GTA San Andreas i've done about 4 times, and now i just keep the saved game totally completed because that's a game you can come back to over and over. Just switch it on, drive around, fuck shit up, it will never get boring

You can run without getting tired in GTA without doing the Ambulance mission.

Someone get a move on and sell me your B7 or CST before I spend my money on something else I don't really want

I agree 100%. The flags in Assassin's Creed are just ridiculous. I'm not doing that either. Same with GTA and the jumps or the pigeons. If I see one, cool, but I'm not pigeon hunting all over Liberty City

I'm with you, I can't count the times I've played through games like KOTOR, Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden, Jedi Outcast, Dark Sector, etc. Just great games and I get something more out of them each time I go through them. Heck old Nintendo games like Strider, Mega Man 2, or Castlevania IV I still bust out on occasion and beat the hell out of. It's fun to play some games again because you like them so much. Nothing wrong with that.

The Achievement system on the 360 really lends itself to playing through games multiple times anyway. I'm not going to pass all the Tests of Valor in Ninja Gaiden 2 on my first pass through the game, but I'll replay the game after I beat it and pass through them. Heck yeah that's part of the fun of gaming.

I've played HL2 so much, I pretty much run around and crow-bar everything. And I mean everything. I got damn sneaky with that thing. My girl absolutely hates the sound it makes, too. Which I think makes it more enjoyable. Especially in Ravenholm.
