My damn DVD drive stopped reading disks. How fucking lame.

Why couldn't Micro$oft get it right the first time and not rush it out?

Dude, rushing it out is pretty much Microsoft's standard mode of operation. See: Windows Vista (along with most previous versions of Windows). Of course, it's a lot worse when it's hardware you're rushing out, since you can't release a convenient patch for it.

Yah...I know. That question was more a redundant release of frustration for me.

It just kills me though that they rushed to release it out, knowing that the design wasn't perfected yet..and they are developing new models of CPU and GPU proc's (90nm to 65nm).

Come Fall they are going to have Blu-Ray drives in them as well.

I used the towel trick on mine and it works fine now.

"I'd rather believe in Jedi then "The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree" - Desecrated

Guys, I've worked for MS on the Xbox department, more specifically on tech support, as a supervisor. If I can give you any advice regarding console gaming, it is this: Get a PS3 or some other console.

I know some of you will bitch about Halo and GoW and that stuff. I know they're great games. But it's just not worth it. It's a $400 item. It should work flawlessly. I am in no way associated with any gaming company at the time, but I've had consoles in my hand from all of them, I am a gamer. Hell, even at the office, a couple guys got the 3 red lights.

It's one of the most unreliable electronic devices I've ever used in my life. Plain and simple. And the MS policies are just a joke. The customers get angry very often, and they're right to do so.

Think about it, it comes PREPARED to tell you when there's a hardware failure. That means that such behaviour is expected. It's just absurd. I don't expect my toaster to get broken. I expect it to work, and if it does break, well... I can figure it out when it doesn't turn on. The fact that the devices shows you 3 red lights when it's broken, is indicative that it's an item that fails more often than it should.

And just to clarify, the guys that pick up the phone on the other end when your console is broken, have their hands tied behind their back. MS is full of stupid little internal policies that basically, require you to get angry on the phone in order to get the job done. And some times that may not be enough. Second, even if you do get angry, that's an unpleasent emotion to be in, specially if the console was supposed to make you feel entertained, not frustrated. Get some other console, you'll save yourself from a lot of headaches.

I don't know if there's the same deal going on in Ireland but my mate's xbox recently kicked the bucket and he went into one of the "Orange" phone shops as they were advertising a free xbox.

So he thought "What's the catch?". You have to have a £35 phone contract with them, but that includes 600 free minutes and unlimited texts. I also believe it includes mobile internet (but not 100% on that). Seeing as he was on Orange anyway paying £30 a month with an extra fiver towards mobile internet he changed contract and came out of town (still broke mind you) with a new phone and new xbox.

It's worth looking into methinks depending if you want the phone contract, oh and he got to keep his old number as well

More words here is more words.

Is there really another choice besides the PS3?

Seriously, you have got some good points over the customer services part.
