Ripping DVDs to take with me

Looking for a platform-neutral format to store DVD's on the computer for my upcoming "trip". The actual ripping process can be either Mac or PeeCee (sorry, no *nix boxes with DVD drives at this time). Basically, what I want to do is to keep just the main feature, the english soundtrack, ditch everything else and compress it in a format that's very space efficient without being dependent on any particular platform for playback.

I'm guessing that H.264/MP4 is the best format, but I have no real clue for the stripping and compressing. I have tools for archiving DVD's, but it's too manually intensive for this process and produces ISO's to be a new DVD master, not a single "video file" for playback.

The Ultimate Question: What string gauge is needed for 18.84# of tension when tuned to E2 on a 27" scale guitar?

Demeyes will become famous soon enough
I think DVDx will do what you are asking for, I believe that most of those ripping programs require the movie to be played right through, so it will take hours to do even a couple. Then again it's been a while since I checked this stuff out and they're might be some better ones available now.

I'll check it out. If I get one a day, that will get me about 30 movies to take with me. That's not too bad.

I've got MacTheRipper, but it's an older version. Do you know if it's scriptable? That might be the answer to my automation issue. The other tool I've used is DVD2One. I'll check-out Visual Hub and Handbreak to see if I can get a single video file from the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories that MacTheRipper produces.

Yeah Visual Hub will do that and a lot more it's a great app. Handbrake will also do it but that's all it will do and you need to use Mac the ripper first on copy protected disks when using either apps. Handbrake is free.
