Australia has oftentimes done bullshit like that to games.

Probably part of the reason why Australia's gaming industry is practically non-existant.

I actually know someone who's going to work at an Australian gaming company and he said they were gonna localize it into different languages. And I said, "Yeah, but who the hell's actually gonna play it?" The answer: NO ONE.

Australia's track record is pretty crappy.

2 points - first of all lately there's been a lot of press about the possibility of an R classification for games in Australia. I'm not sure how it's ended up but it's a lot closer than it ever was. Second, not sure how xbox goes but I got Vice City and San Andreas from NZ so I didn't have to take that shit, so that's always a possibility.

Localise what? I guess you mean a game of some persuasion? As far as successful Australian-made games go, I don't think the ratio is any worse than any other country, but spectacular failures (such as Fury) are much more common due to the lack of support the gaming industry gets here. For an Australian game to take off, it pretty much needs to be bankrolled by an overseas company (the Total War games are developed here by Creative Assembly who are essentially a Sega shell company); most of our developers set up alongside beaches and offer attractive employee benefits for the simple fact that it's the only way the can attract employees from overseas. To be (un)fair, the censorship situation is just as bad with movies and print media, it's just especially bad with video games as the censored versions are often rush jobs that don't function correctly due to removed content (in San Andreas, you couldn't upgrade all your stats due to the blanket removal of sexual content, for example). From what I'm told, we're losing all sexually explicit content in GTA1V as well as anything related to drunk driving. Drunk driving?!?!? Fucking hell. I'm so glad I don't actually pay for things anymore.

Localize the game into European languages I believe is what I heard. And, no, the company is not bankrolled by an overseas company.

What is up with the strict censorship in Australia, anyway? What is their reasoning behind it?
