![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | What to do with old systems Well, some people, if not more than a few, pr9obably have an old PC lying around gathering dust, so instead of talking about the latest and greatest, why not have a thread about uses for old PC's and systems. What do you do with them? What do you reckon could be done with them? Currently, when the new system gets built (depending on time and component delivery, some time this week or next) and set up properly, the current machine will get semi-retired and used as a "storage" for all my mp3's and pictures, and as such I'm going to hook it up to the TV in the front room (and the stereo) and use it as a sort of jukebox through the TV (all this while still hopefully being able to play the mp3's etc from the new machine) And then, upstairs I have a 500Mhz duron or something like that, ancient thing, but there may be a use for it, can anyone think of one? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I stacked my old 500Mhz with RAM laying around, loaded it with a bunch of small hard drives (~20-30giggers) and put Linux (Fedora Core) on it, with a lightweight desktop (Xfce) and now use it for a unlimited (well, as much HD space as I have) web server as well as SSH server, so that my bandmates and I can transfer Tracktion file archives across the internet securely, and collaborate between practices. Very productive. |

:roft: I had a blast dismantling a laptop with my leatherman right before I moved. Sure, I could have kept it as a backup to my backup laptop or something, but I wanted to downsize a bit and anyway the LCD screen was evidently shot (it was kinda purplish the last time I booted it up), so I just took it apart into little peices. It was pretty. ![]() There was a method to my madness - it originally came from my dad's medical office, and at one time had potentially recoverable medical files on it. As this is a huge legal liability, before the laptop could be given away or donated the hard drive had to be stripped. I figure I could have paid someone to do it or given Chris a six pack or something, but on my limited time table I decided it I could locate the hard drive and shatter the disk inside, from a legal perspective all data on it was pretty much gone. ![]() "...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon." | |
