Linux is a fiddler's OS. If you want to set your machine up and just use apps without hours of fucking around to do mundane things, run Windows.

The upside of Linux (I prefer Debian) is that once you get it down, it's stable as a motherfucker.

Yes (just couldn't remember the name of it last night). I know it's in a lot of distros, but hey, it works great, why use something else.

Suse's YAST kicks ass BTW.

Well, i've kind of decided to try oput SuSe and Umbuntu and see what happens

As far as tweaking goes I love getting things working, I remember mixing SCSI and IDE a few years ago and getting that to boot of the proper devices was, uhh, "fun".

Hence if i get on with linux and actually learn the shell commands properly (i could never be arsed with them at college, hence never really got to grips with unix as well as I should have)

As for sound cards, I seriously doubt that Echo has a linux driver for the Gina24 card, so what's the deal with hardware that doesn't have a driver in Linux? Does it just ignore it during install? I don't want to have to unplug a PCI card every time i boot up

And with partition Magic, is the free version adequate?

i've heard great things about SuSe, Ubuntu, and Debian, but i've always stuck with Fedora, since it's what i started out with, and has worked beautifully for me.

i think, maybe, when the next Fedora comes out (FC5), i may triple boot FC5, Win2000, and SuSe.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

Good. Then you'll like Linux, because you can tweak the shit out of stuff.

Never a bad thing to learn new tricks.

If there's no driver, it'll ignore it. Echo does not have a driver themselves, but there are drivers available for the Echo Mia/Gina/Mona/Layla 24. I'll look for them today. Another good place to start for audio stuff is Planet CCRMA, which has iso images of different versions of Fedora Core that you can download that come setup for audio, and have Audour, Hydrogen, Audacity, JackRack, etc. already in the package repositories. Pretty cool stuff.

With SuSe, Ubuntu, and Fedora Core you won't need partition magic if you're doing a fresh install. Just install Windows first, then Linux.

If you're not doing a fresh install, then SuSe and Fedora should still do the trick, without needing partition magic. I haven't tried it yet with Ubuntu.

I currently run Fedora Core at work, and only use Windows XP in a virtual machine (VMWare) for Active Directory Administration and firewall crap. It's a lot of fun!

I'm givin' ya shit! I started out really loving the GUI config tools, and grew to hate them when each one did something differently than the other. When you go from distro to distro, that's a profound disadvantage, especially in the workplace.

I know, I'm just playing around. My problem is I'm a long time Solaris admin, so EVERYTHING about Linux is just slightly different enough to get on my nerves.
