![]() | Quad vs 45nm Chips Hi: Yesterday I went to the Comp Store and was browsing and enquired about a Quad Desktop. I said I was interested in purchasing one. The guy recommended me the E8400 series Dual Core over the quad and said that should satisfy most of my requirements. I have 2 questions:
I use a 32 bit Windows XP OS, I found that on the forums people had issues running32 bit things on a 64 bit OS. Then again, XP 32 can't address more than 3.5 GB of RAM. Ebay and NewEgg sell a lot of Quad Barebones system for pretty reasonable prices (below $800). |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I think the big question is how multi-threaded are the major apps you use? If Sonar 6 and it's plug-ins can't utilize all four processors simultaneously, then you'd be better off with the faster Duo. Similarly, your use habits will affect the choice too. If you have an app that normally takes a long time to complete, the Quad will allow you to get more done in the foreground while the background process(es) do their thing. ![]() | The intensive programs I use are basically Sonar, Sony Acid, SoundForge. I don't do any 3-D rendering. I do use Adobe Software for some designing purposes. I don't play games at all, so thats out as well. My only quirk with my present processor is that the minute I take a couple of Plugins, I hit 100% CPU utilization and the apps quit on me. I don't like that during the song creation process. Early on, I used to use plugins in a wasteful manner, but recently I switched to a more modest and efficient use for the same. But I still hit 100%. Also, anyone have an idea on how stable the Over Clocked PCs are for DAWs ? I'm looking to upgrade, so I really want to make an informed decision on whats best suited for my needs. I don't need an SLI machine, so I don't want to waste money on things that I wouldn't really need. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The 8400 will be significantly faster in raw performance over a Q6600-not to mention, the E8400 has the potential to be overclocked well above 4ghz. The 8400 should only be purchased if you plan to overclock the piss out of it, otherwise you wouldn't be doing it justice. ![]() As long as the overclock is completely stable (which can be easily verified through a multitude of stress programs, the most popular of which being prime95/orthos), it will be just as stable as running a processor at stock clocks. There are a lot of misconceptions about overclocking, but if you make sure to do it the correct way then you'll be set. You could just go with the best of both worlds and get a 45nm quad? They're due to be out sometime this month, and the best bang for your buck would probably be the Q9450 ($320ish, 2.66ghz) |
