My Windows XP boxes have been running perfectly for years, zero issues even under the hairiest of conditions. I haven't had a reason to touch Vista. As long as you build your own computers with high quality parts, and know what you're doing, there really shouldn't be any issues with Windows XP. Obviously Linux, etc does some things better, but the perception that Windows is unstable is unfair. 99.9% of the time it's the end user's fault.

This rant is mainly aimed at haters, not fans of other OS.

You're gonna get a big AMEN here, and although I'm not religious, I feel it's appropriate.

I love teh XP. I run a clean machine, and it has treated me fine. I don't like Vista, but I don't know why. I'm guessing because I haven't used it much?

XP treats me OK. Vista... the words ponderous and cumbersome come to mind. Too much unnecessary user interface, and not enough speed.

If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?

I've grown to prefer Linux at home simply for the comfort and convenience of not worrying about security (at least not NEARLY as much).

I also run XP and would have to agree that it's always been pretty stable for me. I run an FTP server under XP (only because I've been too lazy to switch it to Linux) and it's up 24/7......at least until MS sends out patches that require a reboot.

I of course use XP on my DAW as well. Never expect there will be drivers for my MOTU 2408.

I don't have any major complaints about XP, though I have found small deficiencies since I've grown to enjoy Linux. It was the draconian DRM policies that were to be incorporated into Vista that sent me down the Linux path. They backed off somewhat but I have no doubts that the MS-hordes will be at the gates again.

Vista for me =

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

My Vista Business Edition is on 24/7 and it works perfect every time I use it. The only OS I've had a problem with is, funnily enough, XP. One day it just decided to stop fucking booting and I had to reconfigure my whole computer. So, I threw Vista and Ubuntu on it. They both work great (I hardly use the Ubuntu though).
