GFX card recommendations
What you guys reckon is good? I may be trying to get one as a xmas present or something, but have lost touch. Basically not a shit one, nor one that is top of the line. In between and fairly future proof would be good!
Advise away! |

What's your basic price range? Around $200, the Radeon 9800XT or x800XT if you can get one around there are great, though ATI's driver support is moreover thought to be lesser than Nvidia's. I know nothign about Nv cards, but all my ATI's have been great.

Well, I was looking at between 2-400$ roughly if i convert it over from £'s
Also, DVI will run old analogue monitors right? The other problem I have is that most cards don't like running two screens at different resolutions, so it'll be getting used with a second PCI graphics card which is an ATI 7000 series. Nice and simple huh? |

I've actually never tried it, but I think DVI will work if you get a DVI-9Pin converter. I've seen 'em on the cheap anyway.
My ATI actually has both the DVI and the Analog, and I haven't had a problem running two monitors with it at the same resolution at the same time. |

ah, you see i run one 19" at stupid resolution (1920 x 1440) and the other at 1600x12 (17" monitor) as I don't have two 19" ones (shame on me!)
Hence the two cards, otherwise i'd be able to run both at the same res. But with different sized monitors it's a headfuck going from one size to another. Just looks wrong... Anyway, card wise, I'd like to be able to play some games and still be able to play stuff in at least a year! |

I haven't tried many but i sell a lot of both ATI and Nvidea. Based on what my customers say, Nvidea stuff install easier but ATI performs a bit better..

Which GFX slot mobo do you own? PCI, AGP, PCI Express? Due to the market rapidly shifting towards PCI Express, it's been getting harder to find AGP cards. The same core processor will be more expensive with express too.
I've been a BIG Nvidia man myself. RARELY having any issues. Currently I have a OK ATI 9550, but stepping up to a Gforce6800 soon. I have a number of game intense buds that have that card, and it flies! I also agree with the ones Chris mentioned....they are both equals, it just comes down to preference. I HAVE, however, noticed one difference.... with the newer ATIs, they can't seem to handle single layer graphic effects well... most new games are tri-linear buffering so it doesn't effect those, what seems to be affected is OLDER games that weren't designed to utilize that feature. I do allot of testing with MadOnion benchmarking software, and is where I discovered this difference. Again it only affects older games, where newer ut2k4, d3, CoH, bf, etc... will have no difference on which core you choose. Also they all, with DVI adapter, will run 2 monitors JUST FINE, at different frequencies if desired! I can actually run 3, two monitors & a SVideo output!
*Image removed in fear of Chris's 133t Krom skills!

PCI Express is what the board'll most likely have as it's going to be an athlon64 system

I've always liked Radeon stuff, although their Linux support sucks donkey balls. I've got one 9250, with a DVI to VGA adapter and a regular VGA, running a 19" at 1600x1200 and a 17" running at 1280x1024. No issues.
