Why isn't my wireless working on my laptop anymore?
Ever since about September, my internal wireless card on my laptop doesn't seem to want to work. It might only be coincidental, but it stopped working after I moved, and got a new internet provider. I originally connected the new modem to my laptop through Ethernet for the original setup, and after that, it no longer works wirelessly. My brothers PS3 and macbook can connect fine.
It isn't just my home network that it wont connect to either, it doesn't work at my work place, or back home in NS. It says it's connected to the network, and has optimal signal strength, but in reality, it doesn't seem to be connected at all. I've updated the drivers, still the same problem. No issues with ethernet, or using my phone as a modem through usb. Only wireless. Any ideas?
POOF!

I wouldn't be surprised if disabling the ethernet works, does in many cases. The other thing is, I take it you are in Windows, go into the Network Connections part in Control Panel, right click on whatever yer wireless connection is, go to properties, go to Wireless Connection, and remove anything under preferred networks, anything and everything.
Then once you've done that, apply it, click Ok, then right click on the wireless, click on connect to wireless network (I dont use windows anymore so it could be a different term) and try reconnecting. I've seen all sorts of things like that. |

Check in your Wireless Setting within the computers BIOS (hit del, or a function key at bootup (hit ... for setup))... Most times, if an INTERNAL Wireless card stops working, it because the bios setting is turned to off.
Good Luck. Yeah thats worth checking, although to be honest if it stopped working the moment they got a new provider, I'm skeptical as to that.
I worked in Broadband Tech Support long enough to know Windows has enough quirks when it comes to wireless to stop connections, hell Linux command line is easier to get working Wireless consistently than Windows most of the time...... |

Go into the properties of the wireless connection, and then click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click on properties, and just see if its set to Assign an IP address automatically (DHCP) or Static.

Got it!
It was set to "Use the following IP" It was also set to "Use the following DNS" but there wasn't anything filled in there. So I set both to Obtain automatically, and it's working now! ![]() Thanks for the help guys. That was about to push me over the edge. Wish I would have asked about this back in September though ![]() |
