Backup software

Dammit, over the years I've had several hard drives die on me and I've yet to find any good reliable backup software that actually works. It either is so sluggish that it renders my computer useless for days or it doesn't actually do a correct backup.

Retrospect always comes with my hard drives and it always looks like it's going to work and then a day later when it finishes, it says that the backup couldn't be completed for some stupid reason. Nero finishes, but doesn't backup everything because of "errors". When I tried to backup my desktop, it finished but only backed up 4 out of 40 gigs!

I've tried software called Quicksync which would be perfect if it worked, but it's too cumbersome. I could manually copy the files to the external hard drive, but I'd have to do the whole thing all over again when I wanted to do another backup.

Is there anything that just does an initial backup of everything and then runs smoothly in the background and updates the backup when it detects changes. The online backup software Carbonite would be perfect, but you have to pay for each computer and it doesn't do external drives.

What the fuck! Isn't there a program that just does the job right? I'm sick of loosing data and I don't have the time to keep up with this shit manually.

If you want a backup drive that keeps updated, have you considered a RAID 1 drive setup?

That would work great for stuff on the raid drive, but I'd like to keep my laptop and desktop backed up too.

Eh? I understand why it won't work for the laptop, but the whole point of the RAID 1 setup is to have a backup for your desktop in case one of the hard drives goes bad.

Raid is only really useful for data protection against hardware failure, not for backups. If you delete something, or your system fails, a RAID setup won't help you.

SyncBack download and review - backup and synchronization tool from SnapFiles

Awesome app, especially useful for laptop users. One big backup, then it only syncs (or backs up, depending on how you set it) what has changed since the last sync.

And it's free!

I use this on a daily basis, and periodically do .rar archives using 7-Zip (also free).
