I put an ATI card in my last PC and it continually crapped out on me. I'll just have to figure out what I can use with my stock PSU as I'd prefer NOT having to buy another one but if I have to I will.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Yeah - nvidia is soo much better than ATi in linux. However my FireGL T2 128mb card in my IBM T41p runs perfectly with the fglrx drivers. Btw - during the summer I built a quad core server box for a TA and his research team. It was like Intel Quad Core 6700 I believe, 4GB Ram, Nvidia 7800GTx to run a 32" apple screen and 2TB in raided drives. And the operating system they requested was Gentoo Linux. It was insanely fast. |

![]() | Well, the Quad-Core is a freakin bust! I hooked it all up last night, booted up fine right off the bat. Prior to the hardware install I started the Windows XP reinstall ("upgrade") to get the HAL to reinstall so when it came up it went through the setup and everything worked great. Well, as I've done in the past any small details like the power LED not lighting on the front of the case, or USB port in the case not working, I shut down, pull the power cable out, and opened the case to check the connectors and reverse them as they were obviously connected wrong. So I get the hard drive LED working and reverse the USB connector on the motherboard and after doing all that turn the computer on again. Well, from that moment on the machine powers up for like 3 seconds then shuts off and powers up again on it's own and repeats the procedure. So I pull the hard drive LED cable and USB cables and the same thing happens. I figured it might be the new PSU so I tried my old and it still did it. I eventually disconnected *everything* leaving nothing but the power switch cable connected to the motherboard and it still did it. I pulled the processor out and powered up the motherboard and it stayed on! It only happens with the processor connected. The processor looks fine, the heatsink was attached correctly and the thermal paste nicely spread about. I have no clue what could've possibly happened other than a bum processor that just crapped out. I didn't short anything and did all my work on the motherboard with the power unplugged. Never once have I ever had a bum processor and I've built dozens upon dozens of PC's both AMD and Intel based. Shit, I guess it had to happen sometime, but man it's discouraging. Rev. ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | What motherboard/chipset is this? I read some mobos will need a BIOS update to support the Core 2 Quad CPUs. Don't tell me what I can't do. |

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail It supports quad-core right off the bat. Like I said, it posted fine and rebooted several times with no problem but later failed. I'm RMA'ing both the motherboard and CPU just to be on the safe side. Fucking Newegg charges a 15% restocking fee if I return it and get something different so I'm going to just try the same setup again. If it fails again I'll just return it, pay the restocking, and stick with the AMD X2's. Rev.
