![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Direction in the IT industry All you IT guys, what's a good direction to head in the IT industry? I'm afraid that if I stay with my current company, I'm going to be stuck doing desktop stuff forever, especially since we're joining the union in a couple of months so that will definately limit what I can do to gain experience. What do you guys who have been around think based on current trends will be in demand in the coming years? I have some of my server certifications, but I figure with more specialized work comes a higher salary, IE being a DBA or something. I crave action, I would rather be fixing something that's blown up or setting up something new than sitting behind a desk doing mundane BS. I don't have any real Linux experience, so that might limit some of my options, so I'm not opposed to learning. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Linux has been good to me. In fact the reason I landed my current gig was due to both Linux and Windows experience. The diversity was what attracted them. Being able to program outside of .Net, i.e. Linux programming, is a huge plus too. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | First, get used to Linux. It's not hard and you have several people you can ask for help right here. Second, be able to write at least one language exceptionally well and use at least one more with competence - C and Perl would be good choices. It's nice to have things like C and Perl under your belt as opposed to C# or .Net - which can't be used on all platforms. Also, have a pretty web page. Jeff |

I agree with you abuot the programming language.....a platform neutral language like C would be really good. Actually C's probably the hardest, but best to learn, IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I was thinking more along the lines of server administration, like learning SQL and Oracle and shit like that, not programming. But I suppose it can't hurt. I have a year and a half of CS at University, and the only thing I actually enjoyed was discrete mathematics and my CS classes, but I dropped out because of the useless stuff like arts and the science credits that I don't give a shit about and won't ever use. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | That helped me a ton in the job search - usually designers cant code & coders cant design but I can do both pretty well (php at any rate). Id say anything web 2.0 (ajax especially - ruby/rails) enterprise application development pays pretty well - tho a lot of positions for it are contract/temp positions this space for rent |

I used to use it all the time. It's easy to get the hang of, and learn to use, but it can also be very powerful once you get 'deeper' into it. "ah man, he's got the orbs of energy, he wins : lol :" - D-EJ915
