someone tried to ship a $200 LCD computer monitor through the UPS Store that i was working at last summer. there were some claims made that it got fucked up before arriving, so it sat on the store floor for a few weeks. i asked my manager if i could have it, and she said sure. i decided to see how bad it was, and to see if i could get it working if it wasn't cracked.

it works 100%

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

You guys would be surprised at how badly people factories package things.

I've seen...
...whole car engines shipped across the country with nothing but an old tire and pallet to sit on.

...glass table tops/windows in a box with nothing else in there to protect it.

...the half empty boxes on the bottom layers of the pallet with the heaviest ones on top.

...boxes containing corrosive liquids in some sort of container where the box reads: "This side up. Do not lay on side or upside down. Doing so will cause contents to leak." I'm pretty sure something like that is against DOT regulations. so either some company is just that stupid, or the label was exaggerating slightly.

There plenty other jems that I just can't remember right now.

Words I live by:

You can never use enough tape, stretch wrap or banding to secure your shipment, especially if you ship it via an LTL (Less than Truck Load) carrier.

Just because the box says FRAGILE doesn't mean the people that move it from point A to point B can read and understand French.

If the box isn't full, fill it with something that will absorb the shock of transit.

A home made box constructed out of scraps of other cardboard boxes and duct tape is NOT and acceptable form of shipping container.

A crate that is held together with staples that are only slightly larger than the ones you find in staplers from Office Max will not be a crate for very long.

...especially on making sure your box is completely full. this is something we always tried to stress to people at the UPS Store. they'd come in with a half-full box, and would expect us to insure it. we'd either fill it with peanuts if it was breakable, or would cut the box down.

that one really depends I would think, I shipped a really expensive guitar and made a box out of the box I had just received my other packages through, when it got to the guy he said it was the best packed box he had ever seen, it was so well packed that it got him frustrated
