Unhappy Best free anti-virus? (my computer crashed)

Okay so my computer crashed, and it has a recovery button, but it would only let me restore default settings . So that means I lost Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Norton 360 ect... I am broke ( Hence why I am selling gear)

So what is the best free anti-virus I can get?

If You're selling a Gibson Explorer PM Me!

Shouldn't there be a way to just re-install all of those programs and not have to worry about authentication since you're on the same machine?

If you have the license key you should be able to reinstall those programs. The best alternatives to those programs would be microsoft security essentials and libreoffice IMO.

Ah well I have good news. Since I made a Norton Account I can just sign in and verify through email and it will re-install. Phew, now to get back Microsoft which they told me I need the product key. Mine never came with one and the PIN was semi scratched but it was sorted out when I got it.

Three programs to get (all free):

Avast
Malwarebytes
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Don't download junk and run/update these programs regularly and you shouldn't have any problems in the forseeable future.

Need help with setting up a trem?
Need info on your Ibby?

So you don't just know about guitars, but you're computer geek too?

I don't use Spybot, as I've apparently the only person whom had bad experiences with it, but I use Avast and MalwareBytes and never have problems.

I'm not a big fan of AVG anymore, and Avast annoys me. I think the best free one is Microsoft Security Essentials, which is what I load on all of my customers computers if they don't already have a decent anti-virus.

Sandboxie. It's not an anti-virus, what it does is create a segregated section of your hard drive (called a sandbox) where you can run or install things. Any changes to the computer happen within the sandbox- installed programs, changes to the registry, and altered files. At any time you can clear th esandbox and any changes that were made disappear as if they'd never happened. I use it exclusively when I run my browser and download things. I've been virus free since I started using it.

For example, I always run my internet browser 'sandboxed'. This way, if I stumble upon some nasty malware or something similar that tries to automatically install, I can wipe it clean.

Edit: Forgot to mention that there is a free and a paid version. The free version only lets you use one sandbox, and makes you wait 5 seconds when you first start something sandboxed.

Edit 2: Please note that sandboxie shouldn't replace antivirus software. I use the free version of Malwarebytes to scan regularly. I just don't want/need the live scanning most antiviruses do.

Malwarebytes FTW !!! + a bazillion

Kamikaze7 I for one value my guitars and gear like people value their kids - ....ing with my guitars or gear is equal to me molesting your kids - you just don't do it if you value your life...

Whiskey_Funeral For that much money I'd just put myself through Luther School and build the damn thing myself.

MaxOfMetal I just love guitars. It doesn't matter how many strings, frets, pickups, or wood used I just dig the .... out of them all.

Yup, exactly what I use. I've used AVG as well, but that's borderline virus like in itself with all the update pop ups. Between the 3 of them they cover mostly everything.

Also, I've heard really good things about Comodo, but as far as I know it's not free. That being said, the computer guys I know say that's the best one out there - better than Symantec.
