Prior to your post, I didn't realize this was even a thing, yet. I'm still on XP Pro!

I have been running windows 8 for months. It kicks 7's ass & boot time is like 8 seconds.

.... YEAH!

It sucks IMO. Sure it's fast and all that but metro does absolutely nothing for me. I like the new task manager and the fact that file copying has been improved but metro and no start menu just destroys the whole experience. It reminds me of when ubuntu started using unity. It sucked just as much.

Don't bother with it. It's an even numbered release, so it sucks.

Have you tried linux mint? It's very similar to ubuntu just without the unity bullshit.

Wouldn't surprise me if microsoft dropped mouse/keyboard AND touchscreen support in the next version of windows and use kinect instead. Say goodbye to the good old double click because in the future it will be all about the double backflip and a bunch of stupid metro tiles.

If it's Gnome based I may give it a try.

Yeah, I was going to download the consumer preview, but I'm wondering if it has a built in expiration date that will make me need to go to the retail version or revert to Win7. Anyone know? I poked around online at saw a January 2013 date, but I can't tell if it just stops working on that day, or what.

I think win 8 would be neat on a tablet, especially the tf101. Also, you can switch back to the standard gnome desktop in ubuntu if you don't like unity.

I just want a fancy OS that works as simply as XP. I resorted to putting 7 in '98 look mode so I could use DX11 and turning off the fancy shit I don't use and it's aaaaalmost working for me haha. What do people who've tried it think are the biggest departures from 7?

Praise the sun!

the only thing new is Metro, which is touch based. It takes the Libraries function introduced in Win 7 and progresses it forward some.

But seriously, when you leave the metro touchy thing interface, it's windows 7

But it's easier on the battery, yeah? That's what I've heard, although no one's done a test that I'm aware of. I've got a Macbook Air that I run Parallels on, and Lion EATS batteries, so between the Mac OS and Parallels I'm getting virtually no battery life.

I had new installs of WinXP occasionally hang when I tried to close Windows Messenger.

I've moved from XP, to OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6, and then when I had to upgrade hardware recently, a PC was going to be less than half the cost of a Mac, plus I was getting comfortable with Linux, so I've been running Xubuntu on my Lenovo.

And surprisingly, Unity is growing on me. I'm thinking if 12.04 comes out ok, I'll drop that on here.

Windows 7 is currently a stable platform for my music making...

it will take a bit to convince me to change.

The new file system is tempting

Lets be clear for a moment. Windows 8 Client does not have a new file system, from what I can gather it is still NTFS.

HOWEVER, Windows Server 8 beta introduces ReFS, that is mostly backwards compatible with NTFS, but not fully.

I read an APC article a couple of days ago that says they're considering including it in pro versions of Windows, and that the architecture to run it is in non-server versions.

ReFS is server only, they're working on another one, called DFTS (I think), that they've been touting, but haven't decided if it's to make it into the release of Windows 8 Client.
