Trying to remember a game

Alright guys, I'm trying to remember a video game I played as a young'en. I've been looking for it for years and never found it.

Anyways, details.

I was talking to a neighbor about FF8 (I was probably 8 or 9) and he mentioned hes been playing a game like it so I go over and play it and really enjoyed it!
RPG Styled,
Party follows you around,
I remember having 4 people in the party instead of the normal capped at 3,
I think it was like a half ABS with a pop up menu to use. (Wasn't .//hack series)
Playstation 1,
Around 2000-2001 I played it, so could be released before then.
The graphics weren't like FF8, Characters were a fair bit smaller, the view was almost top down, but had slight angle.
Earthy/Forest scenery with the monster that I remember being flower monsters

Unfortunately, your descriptions don't narrow the choices much, as a lot of turn based RPGs are like that.

However, based on the list above, you can cross off the following:

Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre (strategy RPG)
Brigadine (another strategy RPG)
Front Mission 3 (strategy RPG with mechas)
Castlevania SOTN (it's Castlevania so that's a given)
Parasite Eve series (Square's Resident Evil)
Threads of Fate (one playable character at a time)
Vagrant Story (not your typical Square RPG)
Brave Fencer Musashi (Zelda type)
King's Field (dungeon crawl)
Shadow Tower (see above)
Diablo (does not fit here at all)
Legacy of Kain (see Diablo)
Harvest Moon (see above 2)
Koudelka (you've ruled out Shadow Hearts, so the prequel goes too)
All the Final Fantasy series except 9 (in which case the only FF game in PS that's in 3D+ 4 member party... almost fits a lot of your descriptions actually)

It may be on that list though, but hopefully that narrows down your search options.

FF9 is the only one I never owned, and I think that may be it. I ordered a copy and I'll tell you whether that's it. Always wanted to play it anyways

Vivi is one of the most identifiable characters in FF9. Does he look familiar?

I know of Vivi, I don't remember the character designs and I know he wasn't part of it when I played though.

See if this helps:

Vivi doesn't come up until later. That and since he's based on the Black Mages of FF 1-5, it won't help all too much.

Yeah I've been checking out gameplay videos, But it still doesn't seem to be it. I remember the battle system being a run around type thing, It was too long ago and my memories probably changed it all around haha

I wish square would do a hd remake of FF7, and 9 definitely, and maybe 10 and 12. FF7 was great, but it really didn't strike a chord with me the way FF6 did back in the mid 90s.

IMO- 8 was trash.

I really regret not putting in the time to finish 9.
