NAS vs Removable vs Server storage
I am looking at getting a way of both backing up my stuff and being able to share stuff on the home network.
Basically, I have a 3 year old Athlon PC with 512Mb lying around that needs a hard drive, any MS OS I want (as i got them free of university), and hence, i could turn this into a server and connect it to the TV and the stereo, but out of experience I know that sharing on a disk never turns out like it being seen as an actual disk. I've never used NAS before, so I don't know if apps like iTunes will see it as an actual disk and allow me to point my folder to it (so i can burn cd's from the NAS, and write new files to it by dragging into iTunes, and at the same time having multiple PC's being able to do this) Or, the last option, basic removable storage with drives in caddies and external drives etc. So what's best for backing up, and having all the network sharing stuff? |

run Linux with no GUI, using SAMBA as a print and file server. It can be administrated through a web interface, and is quite efficient. If it's an older machine, it will run fine on it. Or if you prefer a GUI, just use a distro that supports XFCE or Blackbox desktop environments.

I don't know if this is what Jeff was talking about, but there's a guy at work who was telling me of a Linux distro that will turn any PC in a NAS server, just off of a bootable cd, no installation required, just boot and let er rip. You should be able to see any network share as a drive on your PC, just map a network drive. I don't see why iTunes wouldn't work with it or any other media player, whether it be located on a Winblows box or Linux. I could be wrong though, but I think it would work, it would just be a little bit slower than normal, which would of course be helped if you had gigabit ethernet running at home.

Easiest network storage for the tragically lazy:
Snap Servers I got a 1/2 terabyte on eBay in the rack version for $800. You can find the non-rack ones cheaper: http://cgi.ebay.com/500GB-1-2-Tb-Sna...QQcmdZViewItem |
