Need explanation for routing

Hi guys,

I know it seems like a silly question, but I just cant find out what routing your Pickup means. I can't make sense of the translations I have found (FYI: I'm german, so not native).
Is it the work that needs to be done on the guitar to make the Pickup fit so for example filing or shaping the hole so the PU can be put into it? Or is it something you need to do with the PU to make it fit?

Either way the direction is probably clear: I (will) have a PU for a guitar and it won't fit right away.

It is cutting your guitar to make a bigger hole so that the pickup will fit.

yes, routing needed= tooling or shaping cutting filing of the pickup hole to fit.
