Confused with dimensions

Hi fellow guitar players!

I have been looking into neck thicknesses of various 7 string guitars, and in particular schecters and ibanezes (yes this is a schecter and ibanez thread, but not a versus thread).

I've scanned through the homepages of both manufacturers in order tro try and find some useful info about the dimensions of their necks. Here's what I found:

- All necks, both Schecter and Ibanez, are 48mm wide at the nut and 68 mm wide at the last fret.
- All Schecters are 20mm thick at the first fret and 22mm at the 12th fret.
- All Ibanezes are 19mm thick at the first fret and 21mm at the 12th fret.
- Schecters have a 16" radius in general, but there are some exceptions with a 14"
- Ibanezes have 15,75" in general, but with a few exceptions that are 17"

This is what I found on their official homepages, yet it confuses me a lot :S

Why? Because everyone says that Ibanezes are super-thin, and schecters are super-fat, and I can agree with them to some extent. I personally don't like too thick or too thin necks, so most Schecter and Ibanezes are not my for me. Yet, what these dimensions tell is that a single millimeter can make the difference of a thin plank and a massive tree trunk, or at least it feels like it! And since I prefer medium-thick necks I would prefer guitars with 19,5mm and 21,5 mm dimensions... :S

Have I messed something up, or is this the truth? The radiuses are different too, but with 1/4 of an inch! Sorry if I'm noobish but this has constantly nagged at me the last couple of days. Please someone illuminate me!

I study geology cause now I hang out with people that like rock ^^
It turns out most of them like metal though... Even better!

It has to do with more than just the absolute thickness. You also have to consider the profile of the neck- C shape? D shape? V? etc. Those are all going to make a difference.

The back of most Ibanez necks are fairly flat... I am pretty sure schecters are more round, hence why people say "baseball bat" necks.

it honestly has a lot more to do with the shape of the neck than anything else IMO

i have always found that thin C shaped necks feel nicer than thin hard D shaped necks, for example: I hated my RG7321 neck (Wizard II-7) because it was super flat on the back and it made my hand cramp up; then i bought an RG7620 and it was way more comfortable than the RG7321

the thickness was the same, but the neck profiles were drastically different; and it made a huuuge difference; such a big difference that i never play my RG7321 any more

its one of those things were you really need to try it out before you buy it to make sure you're gonna be comfortable on it

Aaaha. Well yes that makes sense actually... or at least sort of. :S
But still... both necks are just about equally thick, which to me translates into the positioning of the hand and thumb on the back of the neck. Neck shape shouldn't affect the feeling that much. But obviously it does. Ah well I'm just going to have to accept that. Unless the dimensions on the homepages are incorrect.

Are there any way to find out what neck shape a guitar has btw?

Something to keep in mind is that neck shape has bearing on your technique. I have relatively short fingers, so I prefer the thin, D-shape necks of Ibanez because it makes it easier for me to position my hand so I'm playing with my fingertips, pressing straight into the strings with my thumb roughly behind my middle finger. Fatter C-shape necks tend to make my fingers flatten out a bit because of the mass I have to reach around. Jeff Loomis loves those Schecters, but have you seen his fingers? He's like Arsenio Hall.

Yeah that's why I don't like thin Ibanezes nor thick schecters: either my hand cramps up or it's like grasping a tree trunk :S

Sorry if I'm spamming this but are there any way where I can find neck profiles for Ibbys and Schecters (amongst others)? Or is it just something I'll have to find out myself "manually"?

LTD's seem to be in the middle IMO at least the 6's i had werent as small as a jackson but not huge either i heard people say its between a ibanez and a gibson, i think it was kinda c shaped though. i personally dont like ibanez to flat for big handed motha****a's = cramped hands sore tendons they are fast, but i play a jackson if i want fast

smooth transactions with: djpharoah, bob123, Sevenstringer, Jolo5150, kfiggy

Yeah I have a ltd and I really like the neck shape and thickness

However getting an ESP here in scandinavia is a bit tricky atm, and I like to vary myself and not buy just one single brand
