Getting into the world of 7's

Hello everyone, I've been lurking around for a bit trying to learn more about the 7 string I wanna to acquire but I think I might need some help. I'm definitely getting overwhelmed.

Keep reading about 7-strings and ask questions when you have them.

What exactly do you find overwhelming? Perhaps we could start there and determine whether or not there's a thread I or someone else can point you to for a good starting point. There's a crap load of information on here.

"... and on either side of the river was the tree of life. The leaves of this tree were for the healing of nations."

"He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle and the herb for the service of man."

"Lifes too short to hate Floyd Roses."

Thanks for the reply's! I bought an RG927 from maximummetal288 about 2 months ago, I'm totally loving it! I think its an excellent first 7. Playing on a 7 feels more natural than playing on a 6 for me. The only thing I'm having trouble with is finding good music to practice playing.

an extra low b or high note if you want. For me and more extended range. bigger cords and interesting scales-arpeggios. I love it, I play scale the summit/animals as leaders etc. really nice stuff

heaven's closed, hell's sold out. So I walk on the earth.

Adapt some chords to 7 string and have a look at some Jazzy youtube lessons, it's a great way to get making your own music and using all the extended range .

Give this a go, even if your not really into jazz, I wasn't but it's actually pretty good fun!

As for bands that use 7s there are a loads of them and i'm sure the members here will give you a ton of them to trawl through! so here are a few favourites of mine;

Scar symmetry
Epica
Mastodon (detuned 6s but it's in drop A anyways so close enough!)
Dream theatre
Fred Brum
Paul Wardingham
Scale the summit

I don't know what kind of music your into so there's a pretty diverse bunch there

Good Luck!

One of my buddies i jam with really like playing lots of key of E blues. I let him play his part all open position on a 6 string, while i play the same chords at different octaves on my 7. Love the low B chord when we come to a 5. That really helped me to familiarize myself with the neck on a 7 string, and sounds huge when paired with a 6 string.

I think the easy way to get into this instrument is to acuire one and then first apply all the knowledge you have from your six string and then with baby steps advance to using the extra string
