Talking Help me pick my first 7 string!

Ive been a lurker on this site for a long time, and not I think it's time for my first post. I'm looking into buying my first seven string this holiday. I have a budget around $1800. I'm not too familiar with what sevens are good, besides the Petrucci models. I was hoping you guys could give me a hand!

I'd hunt down a 7621\7620 depending on your taste in bridges Also leaves you with some cash in your wallet!

Fractal Axe FX Ultra
Ibanez RG-7621 w/ D-Activator
Ibanez UV777 w/ CL+LF
Schecter Jeff Loomis FR w/ 707's

So you were chilling in a candlelit cabin with an Ibanez Universe during a huricane-ish storm in Norway, for 30 hours without power, not giving a ....?

if your gonna do drop tunings you may want to get a 7 with a 26.5 or 27 scale length.

For a little more you can get a custom. There are lots of good options, such as BRJ, Kxk, Strictly 7, etc. However, if you prefer to buy from a brand, you can either go used or new. With that budget, you can go for either one. However, used will always be a lot cheaper and you may find rare stuff for sale, guitars which aren't on production anymore.

Here's my list:

Schecter Loomis
Ibanez 1527Z
Ibanez UV777
Ibanez RGD2127
Jackson SLAT-3 7
ESP Horizon NT 7
Carvin DC7x7

A Musicman JP, as you mentioned, would be an awesome choice too.

You may find this rare beasts used:

Ibanez K7
Ibanez RG1077XL
Ibanez UV7BK (Green Dot)
Ibanez S7420FM (this one's cheap)

Anyway, there are lots of options. Do a search and you'll see.

I'd say bump up your budget a little bit and snag one of these:
ESP Exclusive Custom/Limited Run 6 & 7-String Guitars @ The Axe Palace

If I didn't just buy a tempurpedic, I would definitely be all over it. srsly.

I wouldn't get a custom as my first seven. I think it's a good idea to get a cheaper one at first, and figure out what you like and dislike about it, and then order a custom with the exact specs you like
I'd get a used 1527 (which was my first seven, new though ) or one of the older, quite similar ones, or maybe even a UV/K7.
If you don't like the Ibanez neck profiles, I really can't help you, because they're pretty much the only sevens I've played. Anyways, like I said, I would buy a cheap "test guitar" and spend more money once I actually know what I want from it

Yeah, I agree, getting a custom isn't a good idea because you would never get the same you paid for it if you sell it. However, I don't see a cheap 7 as an option either. I think a cheap guitar would be really hard to sell and he would have to drop the price a lot.

My advice is, buy a good quality 7 (Japanese Ibanez/Jacksons, ESP/Carvin (USA)) because of two reasons:
- You'll like it more. Because of the beauty, quality, sound and even because of being a high end guitar (we're humans, we like stuff if we're told they are high end )
- If you don't like it you can sell it easily for the price you bought it

some stuff you should take into account (imo) are things such as scale length, neck profile, active or passive pickups, construction (bolt on, neck thru, set neck), bridge (tremolo, hard tail, or TOM), and various wood types. i'll pm you so i don't leave a huge wall of text on the thread.

How about the Prestige RGD?

I own the RGD7321, and I absolutely love the slightly bigger scale and the neck is amazing. What kind of neck would you expect on an ibby?

It is great for a starter 7. My only complaint is the stock pups, which are easily upgradable. I am gonna refinish mine as well.

Now that Carvin is doing 8s, I'm putting my 727 up for sale. I haven't listed it yet, but PM me if you're interested in buying used.

But I echo nostealbucket. For 7s, Carvin is an awesome value.

As you can see by peoples extremely varied generic responses, it depends on your tastes in guitar as there's plenty of 7's to go around in this age.

Personally I would pick this up
Agile Pendulum Pro Dual 72527 EB Nat Ash at RondoMusic.com

I have the stripped down version of this from one of the first runs (Curse you kurt ) and its an absolutely awesome guitar, I really can't imagine ever wanting a non-multiscale guitar ever again.

For 1800USD in the USA? That's ... quite a few options.

In my case would be one of the following (maybe with some new pickups as well):
Carvin DC727
Ibanez RGD2127Z
ESP Horizon NT-7

For $1800, it'd be hard to beat that ESP horizon standard. Unless your set on a floating tremelo.

Ibanez is a great choice if you want to save some dollars and you like Ibanez . I would definitely check out Strictly 7. Jim and the guys at S7 make some exceptional guitars: the attention to detail and overall quality is really top notch.

Then again I have both!
