Drop G on an FR 7

I really want to tune my Hellraiser C7 to drop G.
My first question is what gauge strings should be used.
The second is what should be done about the Floyd Rose (original) in terms of spring tension/bridge height?
Any other advice would be appreciated.

Whilst I don't know anything about Floyds, I can tell you that you shouldn't need to adjust tension. Strings should be chosen to match your current tension for the desired tuning so nothing will change there. What's your current tuning and gauge?

Not really a question, but hey.

You should use the gauge of string that gives you the best tension relative to the feel of the strings. Some folks like it super tight, others a little looser. It's all about preference.

Use a tension calculator like the one found in the giant String Tension sticky to help guide you to an ideal gauge for your playing. Depending on what tuning and gauge you have right now you're more than likely going to be looking for some thicker strings.

Nothing different must be done aside from the basic setup procedure.

10-46+64 = normal tension (shouldnt have to touch your springs)

11-49+68 = more tension (u might have to tighten springs a bit)

thats if your scale is 26,5''

hope it works out the same for u

For regular tension (e.g. 10-46 in E) you need 11-52 + 80. For light tension (9-42 in E) 10.5-48 + 70 and for heavy tension (e.g. 11-52 in E) you'll need 13-59 + 90. You'll need to ajust the springs slightly until the floyd balances out.

.059 - .010 should do it, but if you want them to be tight you'd probably have to go up in the high sixties maybe.

I found a .68 to be awesome for drop Ab/G# on a 27" scale guitar. No flop and a nice strong tone. If you are going down to G the .64 might be a bit light. These days I prefer bigger strings and more tone over playability.

Agreed. I'd use 10-49 + 68.

I use the D'Addario Baritone Medium (14-68) with an 11 on the top in Drop G (although I'm on 25.5") But, I think they'd be fine for 26.5" too.

i use a c7 blackjack atx with a 10-59 for drop A, but im going to get heavier ones because i still get a little flop out of the low A... so probably 11-64+

You should mention what scale length your guitar is. I use a standard set of 11s (11-52 I believe) and a 74 for my low G. I have a floyd and standard (25.5") scale length guitar. Tension on the low G isn't what I'd like it, but that's very low tuning for a 25.5" (other guitarist in band is being stubborn and won't tune up a 1/2 step). Not a huge fan of that thick of a string, but it definitely works.

Oh tittahs. Yeah you're probably good going with a set of 10s and then getting a 68 for the low G.
