Question Not Sure if this is the right idea...

I want to check the back of the neck on my 7420 just to see what its stamped as. would i need to go about removing all the strings ect... in order to take the neck off or could i just unscrew it as it is setup?

7 reasons to play guitar..."ADGCFAD"

with all the tension of the strings, you'll risk stripping out the screw holes leaving the strings on.

but, if you slack them significantly, you'll reduce that chance.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

I would just say completely detune them but be careful because the strings can scratch your finish, etc.

for example when I took out my trem, I just completely detuned the guitar strings until they were hanging off, then just popped it out.

However, you will almost definitely need to adjust your truss rod after you finish doing what you are about to do, so if you arent comfortable doing setups, you might want to reconsider it. The low b makes this a much bigger problem on seven-stringed guitars than six stringed because of the tension. Every single time I have detuned my guitar at all, I have completely needed to adjust the rod to get perfect action, even if you won't need to refloat the bridge. You might need to change it's height though, based on your new setup...

wow, thanks a ton guys, learned a bunch of new stuff just now, i guess ill just not worry about all of that until im ready to change strings... and ive yet to do so on my 7420 so getting it setup after that will be my initial challenge.

Ummmmmm....

you might need to, depending on how long you leave the tension off, how long you allow it to adjust to the strings being back on, and if you keep the same gauge of strings on there... oh and if you dont put your neck back at the same angle...
Dude, if you make sure the neck is shimmed exactly the same way as it was when you take it off, and restring with the same gauge strings, and allow it to adjust to having tension again, it should be totally fine. Actually, if you dont, you could potentially ruin a good setup (if you have one). Changing your neck angle IS NOT THE SAME as adjusting relief. you cant just change the angle of the neck and make up for it in relief. Those are 2 seperate things in setting up a guitar. thats one reason i like bolt ons better, you cant really do much about neck angle in a neck through once its built, which worries me in anything outside of masterfully crafted NT's.

If you angle the neck exactly the same as it was during removal, you should be totally fine
