At the beginning i never looked into theory nor did i take lessons.
I just went into my room, closed the door and played melodies on only one string at the start. Then i played melodies with two strings and so on until i had a good feeling for the fretboard. Then i bought a chord-book and from that i derived solos....
All i did was just get some basic knowledge and then just play for hours. With time I learned also to play "economically" (the less movement for a riff/solo the better...) and that resulted in my style. Now i'm picking up other styles and techniques and it flows really easy. I should just learn to read notes someday but I'm simply too lazy because tabs do it also for writing stuff with my friends...

It probably isn't the best way to learn playing guitar but for me it worked

I have never conversed with you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if our rep was good or bad.
Why we posted, or why we rep'ed. All that matters is that two rep'ed against many.(Conan)

i have learned everything by trying stuff out myself sometimes by listening to music and think damn i wanna play that so i started the practice...

not a good way though in my opinion i do got my own style.

but, now 8 years after i first picked up a guitar i feel like im behind on the guitarplayers that took lessons or did something theory for that matter.

so next saterday when my 7string comes back from the shop im gonna start learning theory, buy some books and stuff

jrabin93 is on a distinguished road
Well I got my first guitar during the school year, and had no time to learn I was very busy. I really wanted to learn how to play but had no clue how to so I got a guitar teacher for the summer and see him weekly, it's been a year now that I've been seeing him weekly and now I learn most songs and techniques and stuff from watching online. But if I have a question like about harmonics or something I ask my teacher.

I listened played everything I wanted to play. About 6 years in I picked up some scale books. Learned a few, and now almost 11 years in, I still learn by ear predominantly. If I have an extreme amount of trouble, I will try to find sheet music. It does tend to suck after awhile, some complex songs have taken me over a year to learn by ear. But it's really worth it.

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.
