Question PenTaTonicS!

Since I started I've being inspired by playing styles of Zakk Wylde and Mike Amott and others. I really dig the sound of pentatonic scales being played at 'rip your head off' speeds. It's an all around scale for all styles and I would like to learn more about pentatonics and how to use it while soloing. I got a basic idea of alternate picking and sweeping. I would like to focus more on sweeping and tapping with more alternate picking runs with pentatonics. I'm self taught so far so I only understand tabs.

Tymon will become famous soon enough
Tip: try 3 note per string pentatonics. Just find some cool licks and sequences and try moving up the neck or skipping strings.

Tymon: I've being looking at this poster I got from Zellers and it explains root notes and displays each scale with the root notes and it also shows all the notes of the fretboard as well. So each time I come up with a idea it is based on the scale and I try to figure out what key I'm playing. I've done this for like 2 months now. What I'm stuck on is how to use a metronome, I got a old fashion one made of wood so it's probably not accurate.

Martin-777: I'll see if I can order that, it looks awsome! Any good instructional books and or DVDs for tapping and minor scales and modes. I use these to get a idea and feel for what I'm doing so I don't think I'm just pounding the shit out of guitar. One more thing I'm looking for is a guide to the seven string guitar, chords, scales and whatever else cause I'm just playing tabs from Nevermore to get an idea of how to play a seven string.

As far as pentatonics go, they're not really my thing, but there are tons of players that use them well that I'm sure you'd enjoy. The more traditional players that influenced Zakk and Mike Amott are guys like Frank Marino, Gary Moore and Michael Schenker, then there are guys like Eric Johnson and Marty Friedman with more exotic approaches to pentatonics, and then there's guys like Alexi Laiho, Kirk Hammett and Paul Gilbert combine shreddy plaing with pentatonics.

If you have Guitar Pro, then you should click here and grab the Zakk Wylde Boot Camp, the Kirk Hammett and Eric Johnson columns, the Children Of Bodom masterclass and the Marty Friedman soloing lesson, and be sure to press F5 to read all the playing instructions. That'll give you enough pentatonics to last you a long while, as well as plenty of alternate picking and sweeping, as well as bending and tapping. Enjoy!

Check out Derryl Gabel's columns on Chops from Hell, as there're some cool 313 pentatonic licks there.
