Seven string newb question

Okay, so I just got my first 7 string...one of the cheap Washburns on eBay. After doing a little cleanup work on it today, it's actually pretty decent. However, I find myself having to tweak the hell out of my EQ to get a decent sound. I have to basically kill all the lows and boost all the highs to get any type of clarity on the low B. Would getting a real pickup help with this, or is it an inherit trait of 7 strings?

Is it only a problem with that guitar? If your other guitars sound fine, just get new pickups. Most guitars on the more affordable range of things have cheap pickups and electronics. The pickups that came stock on my Ibanezes sucked, too. Get yourself a decent set of pickups, and it'll sound great. A lot of people on this forum have that same guitar.

I actually had to sell my amp for money a couple years ago. As I mainly record on my computer, I go direct through a PODxt Live. However, my 6 string Carvin has always sounded good through it...it's just the seven string that sounds like mud.

Without a doubt its the pickups friend You need good pickups in order for the low B to be clear and musical. Washburn can offer a guitar like that for $150 by skimping out on things such as the electronics. Throw in a Duncan, DiMarzio, EMG, etc in there (assuming its a model that is well suited for basswood/maple/bolt-on) and you should be in business. I'd recommend the DiMarzio Evo or Blaze.

What Carvin model? How is it set up? What pickups, etc? I'm sure that using the same settings you did for it would not help the Washburn sound good at all.

I have a Carvin DC135 with a Floyd Rose purchased in 2000. It has the stock pickups in it, and I usually play through just the bridge pickup.

Which would you recommend for mainly rhythm work? I plan on still playing most my lead stuff on my 6 string Carvin, or perhaps on my 6 string violin that should be arriving tomorrow. I mainly just want tight, clear palm muted power chords.
