![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Need help from people knowledgable on theory! I'm applying at vanier college here in montreal this week and If I get accepted (which should be perfectly fine!) I have to follow through an audition in about a month and a half from now... here is what they ask of me: 1. Two positions of Major Scales (closed position) : DONE! 2. One position of minor scale (natural, harmonic, melodic and jazz minor) : DONE *except for jazz minor...wtf is that? lol* 3. All major, minor, dominant chords, in 2 barred positions : (Almost Done!) 4. Major 7th, 6th, 9th, Minor 7th, 9th 5. Seventh Chords b5, #5, b9, #9 6. Arpeggios: major, minor, dominant seventh 7. Pick study or exercise 8. Sight Reading Abilities in open or closed position using eighth notes 9. Play two contrasting instrumental pieces: one from the jazz repertoire, the other from any repertiore (melody and chords) 10. Play one twelve bar blue chord progression (traditional and jazz blues) so ya, I need help with: - jazz minor? - whats the difference between 4 and 5? - how can I make a Dominant 7th Arpeggio? - I NEED BIG HELP WITH SIGHT READING - for the jazz piece... It says jazz repertoire... I was learning Eric Johnson's manhattan lately... and thought I'd play that for the audition... that any good? and for the second one I'll prolly play SRV's version of little wing or something... - Is a jazz 12 bar blues basically the typical blues progression but with 7th chords?? Thanks a lot for any help... Ive got the chops for the audition but as yuo can see I lack in the theory department! ![]() P.S: if you guys have any suggestions for the jazz piece that are easier and dont break my balls as much as manhattan then Im all ears! ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | 1. I'm pretty sure "jazz minor" is another name for the Dorian mode, but don't quote me on that... 2. 5 means "altered" chords ie a dom7 chord with those notes altered, so you need to be able to shart the ninth or flat the fifth or whatever off the top of your head when they ask. 3. The notes you'll need for a dominant arpeggio are, at a minimum, the root, major thirdthird, fifth and minor seventh. 4. Too many to name, sorry... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I thought 'jazz minor' was the fixed melodic minor scale... A jazz blues is a blues progression with various chordal substitutions. 'Blues for Alice' by Charlie Parker is a good example if you can dig up a lead sheet. As for sight-reading, your best bet would be to find some simple stuff to work with. What about beginner's violin books? I've got a book of celtic melodies which is great for reading practice. As for the jazz repetoire, I'd pick a standard rather than an Eric Johnson or SRV tune, as that'll probably go down better with the examiners. 'Tune Up' by Miles Davis is a nice, fairly straightforward one to start with. 'If one octave isn't interesting then who the hell cares about the others?!' Oh, word of warning, don't, whatever you do, play a Satriani tapping piece as your repetoire of choice, as most people who've marked exams for guitarists in the past will be absolutely sick of hearing them... ![]() |

'Both Sides Now' is absolutely beautiful...see if you can find Pat Martino's rendition. What about 'Where Were You?' by Jeff Beck...it's a serious challenge to get it right, but it'll definitely get the examiners' attention. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | K thanks, because I'm trying to find something that will set me apart, I don't want to play something and turning out that its the 34th time they hear that song lollll And how should I go about learning/playing these pieces? I mean I'm usually a shredder/metalhead who spends most of his time listening to stuff like Nevermore, Jason Becker, Steve Vai lol... I don't think I need to the same approach? |

Then play through the chords a few times, whilst singing the melody to hear how they go together. Then try and play the melody and chord together (this may require a bit of experimentation with voicings and fingerings if you've never done it before. Then try adding bass lines and chord substitions if you're feeling really ambitious. ![]() |
