HEY !!! good luck with you audition...since Shemyaza beat me to it ,,you could check out ( SO what ) BY MILE'S DAVIS & AN OLD CLASSIC TAKE FIVE BY dave brubeck ...some nice simple chords in that song..As for the 12 bar blues ..lets say it's in the key of A ..the one chord leave it a 7th but the 4th & 5ft chords change them to 9th you'l have much wider color contrast as oposed to leaving them all 7th ...once again good luck!!!! hoped I helped

DR's dead on with the "jazz minor" scale - it's simply the melodic minor played the same way ascending and descending.

...which brings us to question #2, do you know the correct "classical" version of the melodic minor, played descending?

A dominant 7th arpeggio is simply a major arpeggio with an added b7.

For the peices... It LOOKS like they're asking you to be able to comp through the changes, and to be able to play the melody, but not actually to go so far as to put together a chord melody arrangement. If this is the case, then this gives you a good amount of wiggle room - "Georgia" is a favorite of mine, as is "All Alone" (the slow, brooding version, sometimes called "Left Alone" - believe it or not, Satch was where I first heard it). "Song For My Father" is a nice, straightforward one too, if they want you to improvise over it - you can fall back on F pentatonic in a pinch, but there's a lot of room to explore harmonically.

I can post a few jazz blues progressions when I get home, too. Alex- your head's going in the right direction, but IV9 and V9 chords (as well as I9, and their respective 11ths and 13ths) are still present in traditional blues circles. What they're talking about here is a blues progression with some substitutions thrown in.

Also, if you're used to Nevermore, Jason Becker, and Steve Vai, prepare to have your ass handed to you your first semester. All three present incredibly challenging music to learn and perform, but what you're talking about here is a jazz program, not a "guitar technique" program. It's an entirely different skill set.

At the very least, it's not on the checklist you put forward, but I'd work on learning as many different 3- or 4-note grips for minor 7th, major 7th, dominant 7th, and diminished 7th chords as you can between now and your audition. Seriously, these will be your lifeblood once you start playing in groups.

thanks a lot for the help!!!!

If I have any more questions (which I will) I'll ask right here...

I looked at a few standards suggested here and from a bit of research on wikipedia... Round Midnight looks pretty good, Giant steps is my favorite but I'd hafta try and see if its too hard...
