Wood tonal characteristics.
When the strings vibrate they create resonance throughout from the fretboard,to neck, headstock, body & hardware like the [bridge nut combo] you have. The pickups magnetic field relay the strings vibration along with the wood's resonance of the guitar to your amp. Like pickups the wood choice also colors and shapes the sound - therefore they work together, yes even with emgs. The foundation of the wood's tone, resonance, sustain & other characteristics are still there.
Its a combination of wood selection-fretboard, pickups, bridge design, fret material, hardware material that will all affect the attitude -drive, sustain, tone, eq: how the guitar will respond to left hand technique and picking etc. etc. All these things affect the 'EQ' if you will, of a guitar. Pickups are the end eq shaping affect on a guitar-its the door, it ends there, but the sound doesn't start there, I can tell you that I prefer a mahogany body and neck's sound over any other standard wood no matter what the pickup, because of its specific qualities. So the foundation of wood & construction plays the larger role with: 'The EQ Of A Guitar' by, D.B. Llewellyn jr. "The strings relay the woods tone to the pickup in turn the pickup relays to the amp the amp relays all these to the speakers wich in turn relays to your eardrums in wich relays to your brain in witch alot goes on there...just kidding , but it does... ;0P
