Not much to add to what Cvinos said. Good post dude!

If you treat the pentatonic stuff as your 'mommy' scale, and base the core of your improv on that, you won't be able to go too far wrong, and it'll give you a safety net if you can't follow the changes initially.
Playing one scale over the whole progression isn't really wrong as such, it's just not particularly jazzy.

Alright, I got back from the audition a bit ago, and besides sightreading, everything went pretty well! I mostly stuck to the blues scale with some lydian dominant licks in there. I'll know tonight or tommoro how I did and I'll post the results. They only take 2 guitar players and I think there were about 10 or 12 that tried out.
