I'm no expert, but you could start with learning some open-string scales, then practice some banjo-type hybrid picking rolls. Jerry Donahue and Albert Lee both have instructional stuff on the market, so that would be a good place to start. Oh, and practice acoustic strumming, as there's a lot of that, especially if you wanna play with vocalists. 'If one octave isn't interesting then who the hell cares about the others?!'
