2 questions from a newbie
hello everyone.. im a newbie here and in about a month ill be having my seven string.. ive been quite familiar with the six string guitar and im planning to shift or maybe just expand my playing to using the seven string.
question1: ive heard that sevens are difficult regarding chords? i mean COMPARED to the six string(which im not sure if should compare the two) since youve an added string at the bass it would be a lot more difficult to play chords(im referring to barre chords or maybe whatever chords you do on a six string). is this true for you guys? question2: I decided to shift to sevens since im thinking that the guitar would give me tons of improvising options.(i play a bit of rock, alternatives, a bit of jazz). now, is the seven string guitar limited only to new metal? or are you all guys using the sevens ONly for Grunge, death, thrash meatal or NU or whatever hard music? any response from this forum will be greatly appreciated by a newbie whos waiting for his seven string. CHEERS! ![]()

1. I got used to the seventh string in like, 10 minutes, chords are pretty much the same to play, a little confusion at the beggining. Also you cant fret the E string with your thumb, which I liked to to for hendrix chords.
2. I play alot of hendrix on my 7, theres no reason at all that it should be limited to metal. If anything its more flexible for jazzy tunes cause you have more bass notes to work with. Welcome |

Sevens are not new. They originally were made for osme jazz guitarists. Only now are they getting big(ger) in the rock/metal scene.

![]() The extra string opens up a huge amount of possibilities. Obviously you can still play all your existing chords, plus you now have a large number of extra voicings and wholly new chords available to you. There will be a transition period, but it doesn't take long to become comfortable on a 7 string. The 7 string isn't limited to nu-metal at all. It is still a guitar, just one with an extended range and as such you can play any style of music you want on it. Metal, rock, jazz, classical, flamenco, folk, bluegrass, absolutely anything you want. The only limit is your imagination. |

Welcome!
I wouldn't worry too much. Anything you can do on a six, you can do on a seven, so you won't lose anything by making the switch. It's not limited to heavy music at all, as guitarists from virtually every genre have employed different sorts of extended-range guitars. Regarding chords, yes, full seven-string barre chords will take a little practice if you want to do more than just put the fifth in the bass of normal e-shaped chords, but to be honest, you're not likely to need many chord voicings like that. If you want to play your normal six strings chords, you're still free to ignore the Low B, or to experiment with adding new bass notes to them. It'll definitely give you lots of fingering options when you're improvising, even if the bulk of your soloing stays within the normal guitar range (i.e. not going below the low E on the fifth fret of the low B). If you rummage in the 'Lessons and Techniques' section, there are lots of examples of methods guys on these boards have come up with have come up with for using the seventh string to extend their licks and patterns. Just have fun with it and go wild; after a short period of experimentation you should have a good idea how to integrate the extended range into your own style. Good luck, and again, welcome! ![]()

As others have pointed out, the electric 7 originated with jazz players such as George Van Eps. The tuning they used was usually AEADGBE (low to high). If you experiment with this, you might find that it actually make playing big chords easier than on a 6.
On a side note: another tuning that has interesting posibilities for playing big barre chords is BEADF#BC. I'm sure you'll have a blast when your new 7 arrives ![]() |

everything you do in a six string , 7 string can do it ~ there's no different and the extra thing wont get in the way at all , of cuz it requires ur practice and gettting use to the extra string , and it prolly only takes a few mins to do so
