There you go. Nothing you can do, NOTHING... will make that string sound tight or good. Thats a total dud man. Try a different brand, perhaps Ernie Ball or DR. I wrote a whole rant about my hatred for D'Addario .060 strings in my DS7 Review page

Elixir.

A find a .068 works great for A or F, which are the only 2 tunings I use for my low string (about 90% F, 10% A). I could use a .056, but I personally find that a bit too floppy, even though it works. I like the .056 for my low C/D string (low E, typically).

Just to add another thought on the matter: picking closer to the bridge, and using a pick with a sharper point, can also have some affect.

Here's a suggestion: Go to http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/ and order a few single strings of various gauges (maybe between .54 and .70) and try them. If you've got a floating bridge block it temporarily to make things easier for you. Once you've tried the strings and decided which one you like the most set your guitar up for that and refloat your bridge.

im going to have to disagree with you zimbloth ive had several brands of strings on my 7 (havnt tried elixir yet) and the GHS boomers 9-42 with a d'addario 56 on the b sound much more defined than previous brands to me im not sure why theres a brightness from them which im sure will only increase with emgs when they go in next week

are you using d'addario?

Nick, it's worth noting that the switch from D'Addario to Ernie Ball has as much to do with that as the change in string guages, I feel. EB's are noticeably brighter and snappier than D'Addarios are, to my ears anyhow.

Also, I couldn't disagree more with you on GHS Boomers - while I play Elixirs and absolutely love how the Nanowebs sound, the only reason I don't play Boomers is durability (they're good, but no match for a coated string). They're fairly warm sounding, but have a great crisp attack to them. they always struck me as one of the mroe balanced strings I've ever played - in fact, I first got into them when a guitar shop didn't have the usual Ernie Ball heavy strings I'd been using for B's, so I grabbed a Boomer to buy time, and then found myself wondering why suddenly my low B sounded so much better.

This is all highly subjective stuff, of course, so I'm not saying you're wrong - I just want to throw another opinion into the ring.

Musicians Friend sells 3-packs of Ernie Ball wound strings from like 20-74 so you could get some of those, I just ordered some 64s.

Exactly, just experiment with different gauges & brands til you're happy.
