I usually practice a particular part for 15 minutes on clean, then test myself to see how good I am at that part with distortion (if it is a part with distortion) then go back to playing cleanly.

both, I play unplugged alot at night but I need to play clean and with gain. I find that if I play clean all the time, when I do go with gain I have to re adjust my muting and deal with string noise, especially with arpeggios.

Nic has a spectacular aura about
Definately both. The Petrucci instructional video has lots of great stuff on it. My brother (and drummer in my band MSRP) gave me the best piece of advice to take to heart - Start slow, painfully slow, till you can play it perfect for a minute straight. Then and only then kick up the speed incimentally till you are at or above your target tempo. It really sucks and can be boring as all get out, but it works every time.

Sometimes I can be such a fucking nerd. When I'm intently focusing on my guitar playing & have two hours a day to set aside (which isn't fucking ever the case anymore), this is my Petrucci-inspured practice regimen that I try to stick to:

My practice tone depends on my mood. If I'm in a good mood, I'll use some moderate distortion. If I know I'm going to suck that day and don't want to piss myself off with loud & obnoxious bad playing, I'll probably just use clean tone.

I figure, if I can play it clean and it sounds good, then when I add distortion it'll totally kick ass. Oh, and when I use clean sounds to practice, I use very minimal effects. I don't want to pretty up the sound, I want a basic & clear sound.

Vince, you ARE a nerd. I'm impressed.

As an aside, I just recently rediscovered the melodic minor scale.

No one else finds it convenient that there are 7 days in the week and 7 modes in a key?

It's fun, but I'm still trying to work it into a piece somewhere. Going up and coming down differently is definitely interesting.

Haha, that sounds almost like a beer ad, but not.

Vince, from a purely functional standpoint there's really no need to do that - that may have been the original idea behind the melodic minor scale, and again if it works in the peice of music then by all means, but when jazz musicians appropriated the melodic minor scale and its related modes for their more improv-based style of music (as opposed the more rigorously composed classical useage), and began using it not as a melodic tool modified from a straight minor for stronger resolution but rather as a scale unto itself used to suggest altered chords, it became acceptable to use it in the same manner up and down.

To the best of my knowledge, no jazz guys really use it in the classical sense anymore, where you ascend through the melodic minor and descend through the natural minor.
