Is there some kind of secret to finger tapping?
Right now I'm concentrating on sweep picking (River Dragon solo and some arpeggios) and some more classical pieces that involve complex picking patterns for technique right now.
I'm also working on "Empty Words" on my own as well. Well even when I turned my gain from 3 to 7 I can't hear my tapping is still pretty quiet. I don't want to crank it to 11 and lose clarity. I tried pressing harder as well but I don't want to end up driving the notes sharp. What's the trick to getting the notes to be fully anunciated? |

You can always use the side of your pick?
Another thing to do, is when you tap on the string, pull it towards the side of the fretboard a little bit (IE, if you're on the high E, pull upwards a little bit and get the string to catch). That way, when you let go of the string, it rings out more. It also helps to have some really decent legato technique on your left hand as well. Hope that helps Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high, Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie, Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally. Take it just as you took hammer-ons and pull-offs when you were learning those. Squish down tight, and almost pluck the string as you lift back off.

you're learning sweep picking and you dont even know how to tap?
might help if you developed a callous on the figer you use to tap (i never liked using my pick, the note after the tap never sounded as good as tapping with my finger), as well as getting the pull (actually a bit more of a push with tapping) off right, the tapping part of eruption is a great piece to learn tapping with, practice makes perfect, they say. also make sure you're accurate with your tapping, if you accidentally miss and hit the fret it'll obviously sound like shit.
Dave didn't like the song on the radio. So he killed a little girl.

The Philosopher intro is a good place to start. Just take it slow and make sure you hit the right string. Or Hot for Teacher…

i liked that one paul gilbert exercise he did based off the 4 seasons theme. (Spring specifically, form the first movement).
also, i'd suggest Randy Rhoads' solo in Crazy Train as well. .that was the first tapping thing i learned |

The way I think of it. 2 handed tapping is just an extension of normal legato technique, with all the same mechanics. Try some simple, repetitive exercises with a clean tone, just to even out the strength of both hands. You just have to be methodical and work at it a little bit every day.
