True. Creeping Death = Badass Mofo of a song.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Yeah, Nirvana's boring, but it's a great way to start playing guitar. I remember when I first started, I would watch Kobain and say "Man, how does he move from chord to chord so fast!" because I couldn't move fast enough to even play "Smells like Teen Spirit".

You'll find that playing songs off the Nevermind album is great to start with. After that, I moved on to Metallica's black album. The guitar parts are intermediate on that album, so if you can play the Nirvana stuff, that'd be the next step in the right direction. From there, I agree with Chris, the more metallica you can learn, the better metal player you'll be. For non-metal stuff, I highly recommend Dave Matthews.

...and if you really want to get good at learning chords, go join a church choir or band. It may not be your thing, but within a few months, you'll know your A7 from your Daug5add9. Plus, the church thing usually makes the parents happy.

just my $.02.

X in a tab means to hit the string percussively... like lay your left hand on the string without fretting anywhere and then hit the string with the pick.

So like just resting a finger on the string but not pressing down?

Um, Nirvana's boring?

Huge fan here. Kurt's the reason I picked up the guitar (well, with some help from Jimi), and I'll always love that band. And say what you want about Kirt's technical skills, he was a hell of a songwriter and he inspired literally millions of other guitarists to play. And sure, maybe only one in ten got past simple power chords, but that's still a LOT of players who branched out and got into some pretty serious stuff because of these guys. And, if a band inspires thousands of (eventually) serious guitarists, how is that a bad thing?

"Unplugged" is still on the short list of CD's I couldn't live without.

How about we lay off the Nirvana bashing, at least in my presence?

"...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon."
