35" bass + what Gauge for low A = Very tight but still playable?

So what gauge should my bassist get for the Low A string? I don't know what is on it right now but it is definatly TOO thin and vibrates too much. I was thinking .145? Tuned to A that is.

i use a 135 for low b on 34, i bet 135 - 140 would be fine at a for 35

Yeah, a 135 or a 140 would be fine.

Thx! He bought himself a .135 set! Hope fully this gauge won't sound like a massive wall of bass.

I'm weird, in that I like heavy-ish strings on guitar (10-66 on my 7-string) but on my bass, I like lighter strings and I like them to rattle around a bit, so I use 45-130s on my 34"-scale 5-string tuned to B.

i like the opposite, kinda... i like medium-loose tension on my guitar strings, and then kinda tight tension on my bass. that way my bass can have the definition and tightness in the tone that i like, and the guitar will sound bright and butal :P

.145 should do it as tension goes.

I'm with Knucklehead on this one, my lowest string is a D'Addario Prosteel .145 tuned to A or Ab over 35 inches. At A has a medium tension and punchy, at Ab it has a low tension.

.135 or .140 is definately too loose, and Prosteel .145s are stunningly bright and flexible strings, the best i have discovered.

Standard B strings found in sets are almost always wayyyy too loose, i would use .135 for B minimum.

I use a D'Addario .145 Pro Steel taper for my A0, excellent string. Full sounding bottom, bright, smooth top.
