Looking for a good direct recording amp

I don't want to spend a ton of money but I would like to find something for just recording purposes that sounds half way decent in the $300 range. I would like to be able to go direct but I wouldn't be opposed to mic a cab either.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The POD XT seems it should do the job just fine.

I use a Toneport UX1 and, with the packs, it does everything the POD does, plus it's got an XLR in so you can record vox or mic a cabinet through it. I've recorded an album, running every instrument directly into it, with the exception of the synth tracks, and some of the leads *which were mic'd and then run through the XLR in anyway". You can beat the price, anyway.
