Tobias Basses

Anyone checked these out? Would like to try one - perhaps the Growler...

ghoti is a jewel in the rough
I tried a couple out at a store a while back. They were OK, but I didn't feel that the price matched the quality. I have heard that the older models (pre-Gibson) were incredible, but I've never played one.

Easy way to figure out if they're what you want is to try a few and see.

Question authority. Don't ask why, just do it.

The pre-Gibson ones played like buttah. The ones that Gibby has been putting out however have been hit or miss. I really don't think that any of the ones I've tried were worth the asking price either. They just seemed lifeless to me.

To be honest though. I really don't see why anyone would even bother looking at the Gibson made ones. Especially now that Mike Tobias has more affordable versions of his MTD line. Of course if you can afford a MTD American, they're definitely worth it.

Beta is a jewel in the rough
MTD Zephyr line. Also comes in a cherry red color, and Tobacco burst.

I like the asymmetric necks on the Tobias basses, but the price, as ghoti says, doesn't always match the quality. I played a used Killer B at my local GC that was decent, but the B wasn't as killer as the name implied. Could just have been that the strings were shot, though.

In that price range, if you want a name branded guitar, get a modulus over a tobias 95% of the time. Ive played amazing tobias basses, but ive played alot of let downs, which is inappropriate at that price range. im yet to play anything resembling a failure from modulus (ive spent a few hours each on around 8 or 9). Pedullas are a much better option as well.

That said, id spring for something from a smaller luthier like sherman (whos a bassist mind you) once you start getting over 1500 bucks

Reverse Headstocks or Bust

Yup, this man speaks the truth... MTD > Gibson+Tobias. Even the Kingston line are stellar basses.
