![]() ![]() ![]() | Trying out 5-strings I just came back from my local Guitar Center, where I tried out some 5-string basses. I played a bunch of MM bongos and the like, along with this under $300 peavey millenium bass or however you spell it. On all the 5 strings I tried there was something that bothered me intensely... FLABBY LOW B ![]() ![]() What is the gauge a standard low B comes in? Because I want to add .020 to it! ![]() Also, I'm really interested in a 5 string with a humbucker, that's it. Any simple, stripped down basses like that availible for under $500? Thanks in advance for replies! ![]() What a Djentleman! |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i think .120 or so is standard, but i don´t like anything thinner than .130 i think, maybe .135... look for something around .145, i know Conklin sells those through their site. also, they have a .165, you might wanna try that out as well ![]() -------------------------------------- Æn Æppl Æ Dæi, Kiips De Dåktor Awæi |

![]() ![]() | this is the problem of the 5 stringers and beyond. i have ibanez sr405 34 scale and i am using diadario 135 for low B its O..k... ( i am also playing half step dropped) it took me couple years to adapt and learn how to pull clean punchy sound out of it particularly on fast playing (i am finger player). i have never tried anything thicker than 135, it could solve my problem or at least help to solve it. maybe longer scale bass would do the trick as well i don't know. i think no matter what instrument you will choose you will have to learn to pull out the nice clean sound out of it |

![]() | Yeah most 5 string basses come with .125 or .130. Way to floppy IMO and a poor match in tension. Not that most bass string have good equal tension anyways but im speaking relatively. Go to juststrings.com and get a .140 ken smith bass burner. Awesome for a low B/A clear and punchy. Sometimes ill punch it up to a .145 if im recording songs in Low A. If your bass is a 35 inch scale you may be able to get away with a .130-.135. On a 34 scale I find .130 or less just unacceptable for low B/A and .140-.145 ideal. Try to exclude the possibility of suffering which the order of nature and the existence of free-wills involve, and you find that you have excluded life itself. |
