Picstory: Time to restring my big Dickens (56k = small Dickens)

Well the time has come to restring my mighty subcontra tuned bass, the big red Conklin GTBD7 that serves as the provider of earth shaking lows in my world. So I went to the only place where I could get the necessary strings to make my subsonic monster work its magic: The series of tubes known as the interwebs!!!

The bulk come from the wonderful JustStrings, a godsend to extended range guitar & bass players:

...but something a little extra and special can only be had directly from Conklin guitars:

That's right... that's over $80.00 worth of strings. I'm glad I don't have to do this very often!

And then they arrive:

"Ha, I will disrupt your anal retentive layout."

"What are you gonna do about it, huh?"

On to the good ol' surgeons table:

Time to go bye bye... turning the keys (lots and lots and lots of turning the keys) :

Out with the old:

The fingerboard looks strange all naked like:

The recently beheaded string Medusa:

Boy, that fingerboard looks as dry as a nun's whatsit!:

This stuff will fix it:

All right, there's three (I'm not gonna picstory this one F'ing string at a time):

Up to five:

Then six, and now time for the bad boy to go on. This sucker will make people think your compensating for something.... :

Somewhere, there is a lop-sided suspension bridge:

Obligatory size comparison shot:

That's more like it, snappy fresh strings lookin' good:

More glamour shots for those who appreciate range:

Tune her up, and put her back in her stand:

Sittin' pretty:

Ah yes... the restringing is complete. Bow down!

All this red & gold has got me thinking I need something to celebrate all my hard work... I'll do some playing later:

Fin.

Strings spacing is off on the 2nd highest string at the nut. Nice bass what do you tune it to?

I never really noticed. I should probably have a pro do a perfectly fitted upgraded nut for it one of these days. I did an okay job of filing it out to fit the bigger strings through it, but I'm sure it could be better.

It's tuned E0 A0 D1 G1 C2 E2 A2, low-to-high. Basically a six string bass a whole step down with the top two strings another half step down to facilitate my guitar-brain, and a E0 (one octave below a normal bass) as the seventh string.

That's more of a phallic symbol than any of Princes guitars

Neat! Any chance of clips? Why do you leave so much extra length on the strings, though? That's about a bajillion winds around the pegs.
